    It is *not* illegal to have weapons on civilian vessels. You have to declare them when you come into port in most countries where they may be taken and put under lock and key till you leave. But otherwise you are permitted to have some pretty serious personal firepower.

    Well perhaps not in Australia. But in Germany its the automatic fee for getting a injunction in place that is then later found to be without merit. Apple could be on the hook for a lot of "lost sales".

    The claims in the summary are not credible (no i didn't read the article). I work on this stuff as a day job. Something either kills to quickly or it kills to slowly. If it kills to quickly, it kills hosts before it spreads. If it kills to slowly it is effectively its own vaccination. And how do they know its virulence? They bloody guessed. Probably. Seriously 5 mutations happens all the time in the wild.

    The Spanish flu had a estimated death rate of about 3% IIRC. That was really high.

    Big Pharma is not really part of the vaccine debate for the very simple reason that there very little money in vaccine. At the last conference i was at, there generic aspirin brand made more that 5x what there vaccine department made. Hence there is not much direct money from pharama coming in either. It is mostly government grants.

    Bells tests has nothing to do with *interpretation*, but a again tells us the result of a *experiment* that then excludes hidden variables rather than god playing with real dice. The dice are real and it says nothing about interpretation over the predicted results of the experiment.

    What implication? Seriously. What was there experimental setup again?

    The "interpretation" of Quantum mechanics has been going on for a long time and it has nothing to do with the result. Nothing changes. The math doesn't change. The predictions don't change. Nothing measurable changes. In fact its still what it always was, a way to predict the outcome of a experiment, often to very high levels of accuracy. Pushing meaning beyond that is philosophy. That is: untestable.

    Real Scientist are dismissive all the time. Many in my field are famous for already knowing the correct results of experiments before they are done, and *know* that all other results are wrong.

    Seriously, this Utopian view of scientists here on /. has nothing to do with reality.

    This is a factor of about 10. ie About 90% of a galaxy is dark matter. So again nothing really close to the mass of a planet traversing trajectory.

    The OPERA experiment was repeated with the *same* timing equipment, using the same method with the same people. So any systematic error is going to be the same. Its is not a *independent* result.

    Not really. Assuming an average of 1 proton per m^3 for the interstellar medium all the way, its less than 2.5*10^-6 kg/m^2. But then of course the interstellar medium may be quite a bit more dense. Even 6 orders of magnitude gives us only 1kg/m^2 of mass over the 168 000 ly.

    We can actually produce more isotopes in the lab than you will find in "space" since many are unstable. We do know the properties of all isotopes with a longish half life because we have physical samples of the stuff to measure these properties. We have a very good idea of the properties of the rest, but given that they last fractions of second or less, they aren't useful for engineering anyway.

    This is not UFO: Enemy Unknown. There is no Elerium-115 or otherwise.

    That is stupid. You don't come up with a better steam engine before the steam engine. At the time people were only just starting to do real time shadows in games. There was no reason to develop it before then. However once more that one person has a need to improve things and they come up with the *same* algorithm at roughly the same time... Well its pretty bloody obvious. We are not all retards waiting for lawyers to define obvious.

    Even if you think this particular instance of independent invention is flawed, there is plenty more examples. When the problem arises and different people come up with the same solution, why should all but one be denied the benefit of their hard work?

    Step 1. set standards for news organizations, so we have an informed populace. Every major news organization would fail these standards now.

    This never works. All you change is who is telling the lies. ie the regulatory body that enforces these standards for example.

    The only defense against BS is a informed public with good BS meters. Not the BS.

    Direct, 100% democracy also leads to huge problems for minorities.

    I believe the term you are looking for is "the tyranny of the majority". I like the direct democracy idea, but have no idea how to "fix" this issue. Its not like representative democracy doesn't also have this problem either.

    At the very least you should be able to *choose* if you belong to a union, and if so choose which union. This crap of compulsory unions just creates another corrupt entity that is looking after itself and not who they represent. After all, where can you go? You can't even choose to not pay your union dues. Yea sure they represent your interests.
