No they are not. But that does not mean you let them be the only one in control of important infrastructure. Its not like the US wouldn't do the same. Turning selective availability back on is not really a act of war... but rather a powerful negotiation tool if such a extreme situation comes up. With all the doom gloom and war that everyone here on /. predicts will result from AGW, then i think its prudent to have a backup.

Allies in one war are often enemies in the next.

When this happens it will probably be when we have fusion of some sort (there has always been steady gains, we don't need a break through), which solves the 15 day nights on the moon and gives much higher energy density. Solar is overrated.

There are a lot of materials already in space, why do we need to bring them all from earth?

When we get DD fusion working, there is enough energy in the worlds water to produce more output than the earth receives from the sun for 10000 years. ie you could get serious warming from the waste heat. There will be plenty of energy to move a few billion people around. Then there is all this water ice throughout the solar system.....

You know what my daughter said when told about Steve Jobs death? "Who is Steve Jobs?". Lets face reality, there was a few segments here and there about "wow this guy died and he invented technology man"*, admittedly by the odd "famous" person. But most people don't know and don't care who he was or what he did. /. is not really a typical slice of the general public in this regard.

Now if Justin Bieber gets run over by a concrete mixer, you bet your ass you the media will get "WAY WAY WAY" out of hand.

And if you in fact checked why, it has nothing to do with the ozone layer hole. It has to do with the fact that we have about the same latitude as Spain, and are 1000 miles away from anywhere so there is a *lot* less particulate matter (dust) and other aerosols to scatter things. I assure you there is plenty of other places where an hour outside gets you a really bad sunburn. I have personally seen it in southern and Central France, Spain, Croatia, Italy, Japan hell even Austria.

Also Sunburn is not a measure of UV. If you look at actual UV data, NZ and Aussie do not look any different to other places with similar Meteorology/Climatology.

By the way the Universities in NZ have quite (or at lest had when i was) big group working on this with yearly trips to Antarctica to study it. I have seen the data but missed out on a trip :/
