  1. Network Solutions is a bad thing (TM) on NetSol To Do Domain Name Auctions · · Score: 1

NetSol'n is not a very good thing. They only got where they were by holding a monopoly on domain names and charging outrageous prices for them (sound familiar?). It doesn't surprise me that much that they are doing this because they have generally been an abusive registrant. I feel sorry for those poor souls who still have domains through them, because they are paying outrageous prices and no longer own their domains (with the new license). It's pretty sad that I registered my domain with Gandi.net for only $11 and that people who pay Network Solutions several times as much don't even own them. Oh well. Network Solutions also seems to think that it's above the rules. I wished to register my family domain, mendelson.net, and they were squatting it. Worse, however, was that they aren't even paying for it! Their license on the domain expired on November 14, 1999, and they still own it! Who knows what crazy rules allow them to do so.

  2. Violations exaggerated? on U.S. Lags Behind Europe In Online Privacy · · Score: 1

I think that privacy concerns have been greatly exaggerated in the press, as I haven't heard of any major violations. The only complaints that I have heard were about targeted advertising, and they already do that on T.V. without any adverse effect. As long as corporations don't SPAM me or call me on the phone and ask to buy something (which most online companies don't do, and the ones that do NEVER will receive money from me based on my principles), I don't have much of a problem with it. Allowing them to make a little bit of money off of us through targeted advertising can allow many corporations to provide more free services, as most services on the internet, such as newspapers, gaming sites, search engines are.

  3. Good idea for a patent on U.S. Lags Behind Europe In Online Privacy · · Score: 1

Yeah right, I'm sure Europe is so much better than the US in regards to privacy. If they really are so intent on protecting privacy then why don't they allow someone to patent it? A patent on privacy would protect it from everyone for the next 20 years, and here in the good ol' U.S. of A. you can do so.

  4. server down? on Linkguard To Cure Broken Links? · · Score: 2

Not a bad idea. What happens if the server is temporarily down, however? You don't want everyone taking down their links if it is just down for a day or so because of technical difficulties. This service would get annoying if someone had a lot of links on their site and a few were randomly down on that particular day.

  7. This is bad... on Appeals Court Will Take Microsoft Case · · Score: 2

Microsoft was hoping for something like this. That way they can stall and hold out until the next presidency. They are hoping the George W will get elected, as he will take it easy on them. It wouldn't just the NRA working from inside the White House...it would be Microsoft as well. Now let's just hope that this court finishes the case quickly and that it gets up to the Supreme Court by the end of the Clinton presidency. Microsoft undeniably has a monopoly but might be able to keep it if they can slow down the case long enough.. Remember when they were going to submit their resolution of the case to Jackson and asked him for more time? He told them that they had two years already! Let's just not make it three.

  9. Carbon-based the only way? on English Researchers Find Extra-Terrestrial Water · · Score: 1

This sounds like an interesting development but I doubt its significance. I mean, the bacteria and the organisms on earth started in water, but is that really the only way to generate life? We are a carbon-based organism and to think that that is the only type of organism is being pretty close minded, in addition to inaccurate. Also, not to be a pessimest, but I don't see how big a deal it is to discover alien bacteria. It probably exists somewhere, it's just a matter of where. What would really interest me would be to see an intelligent life form (although I guess if we have to go one step at a time then that's just what we'll have to do).

    Just one crazy humanoid's opinion.

  17. How truly ironic on Amazon Sued For Patent Infringement · · Score: 1

This truly proves how absurd current patent laws are. I seriously doubt the validity of Intouch's claims that it is the first to offer a sample of a product that it is selling. I could have sworn that there were free food samples at the local supermarket. Will they get sued too? Amazon should honestly just abandon this patenting business that seriously threatens the burgeoning industry of E-Business and get back to what they are about: selling products online. If they are truly innovative, they wouldn't need to sue other companies to get an equal footing in the marketplace.
