I would like to take this oppurtunity to invite Linux users of all skill levels, be they newbies or experienced users with a problem or willing to lend a hand to #Linux on Efnet.

I know this is off topic, but If you want to watch fast accurate mpegs in Linux fullscreen then grab a copy of Loki's SMPEG sdl based player. I performs a lot better than xanim. Ive tested it with the videos Goodtimes and Buddy Holly of an old win95 cd and it ran fullscreen at full framerate with no glitches whatsoever.
Wine has come a long way in the past year. I can only hope this doesnt cause wine to lose its momentum.
Mainwin allows windows code to be compiled on linux into native executables. Wine does this too but also allows the loading of native Win binaries to be loaded and executed using the wine win32api implementation.
Will the Mainwin people implement directX and write a direct3d to glx translation layer like the Wine crew are doing? Personally I doubt it. Wine also allows the loading of _native_ linux libs from a win32 program. I can fire up halflife and wine will load the _linux_ glide lib and give me full 3d acceleration.
Last but certainly not least... Wine IS open source. You want to hack in something that makes the widgets look like GTK ones? fine! try doing that with Mainwin.
ATI Have actually released specs for their chips recently allowing the GLX team to begin work on some of their chips. Hopefully this latest card will also be documented so the glx-developers can hack up a driver. So far we have hardware acceleration on the 3dfx cards, Matrox g200/400, The Nvidia cards and some prelim support on the ATI's . Hopefully this trend contnues and 3d support in linux continues to grow. Who knows, maybe by the time the Nvidia and the ATI card hit the shelves, manufacturers will be shipping drivers on their CD's
From the end users point of view this would be my main question. Personally i run KDE1.1.2 but use quite a lot of gtk apps. Your app shouldnt be integrated for a DE unless it absolutely has to be. This way users of other environments beside KDE/GNOME can benefit from the app. Unless you're writing something using the CORBA extensions of either DE or writing a panel applet then I would definitely advise you to write your app as a pure gtk application.
Users of both DE's will be comfortable with a gtk app and most if not all of the major distros come with GTK 1.2X installed.
Perhaps someday there will be a way of easily writing one piece of code with an abstraction layer that can be compiled for either DE but until then i would defintely use gtk
The Point sounds good to me:) ooohh and free beer - sod the badges and t-shirts. Free beer will attract thousands, even if they've never heard of Linux. So there you go, the organisers are happy if the hall is full and the ppl going are happy because of all the beer^H^H^H^H^H linux related stuff.
The artical was very sparse on the lensing effect. As I understood it lensing occurred with very high masses, typically black holes. In fact this is one of the methods used to try and detect black-holes. How does this work with a non-dark object? Surely the light of the star would block out the tiny amount of light reflected off a planet from its sun?.
Nice to see a major player and influence in the 3d gaming scene not only promoting linux, but actively helping out in the development. I'm subscribed to the g200-glx developers list and have been very pleased to see the amount of posts from John ( several a day ) with ideas and patches. Nice one ! Congrats to the other developers too , the module works really nice - an excellent speed increase over software mode. Ive being recommending the G200 to newbies asking for a good agp card to use under X because (a) Very fast 2d (b) 3d support ! (c) Matrox did the Right Thing(TM) and released a decent chunk of the specs. We can only hope that other Harware manufacturers will follow suit
Matrox are you listening? How about those Warp Engine Specs for the G200 ?
I recently bought a PcChips M747 Baby AT BX m/b with onboard SiS6326 8mb AGP and a Soundpro chip - despite some bad reports about this manufacturer the board is 100% stable - the onboard sound works a treat and the SiS AGP is supported by Xfree. My ONLY gripe is the fact that while I have an AGP video chip - I cant upgrade later to a different AGP card as there is no onboard slot, I can if course pop in a PCI card - and the sound can be disabled of course and another card used instead.. Watch out for this.. bottom line is - research it as much as possible - If you can afford it always get the best and Good Luck!
Hope this helps

Sorry but it DON'T find this funny. Terrorist violence is not something to joke about. It gives off the wrong image of Eire.
