  1. It's time to get serious about bugs NVIDIA on NVIDIA Releases Optimus Linux Driver With New Features · · Score: 2

Please NVIDIA do something about reliability, compatibility, provide debug symbols, meaningful error messages, and a way to easily provide feedback and response and the understanding of how the collected data is used rather than the impression it goes to /dev/null.

You have subtly reassigned your user base to serve as your beta test annoyance discovery team, selling hardware with drivers that provide the air of functionality but each with its own nuances of failure and glitches.

I try not to be nasty, but Linus's response was correct. It's time to draw the line and make up for the last 4 or 5 years of failed promises.

  2. Infrasound, cortisol, and panic attacks on Windfarm Sickness Spreads By Word of Mouth · · Score: 1

    http://www.windturbinesyndrome.com/2012/pierponts-research-on-wind-turbine-infrasound-vindicated/

I have lived a year in hell, a suburban environment in a stickframe house, light construction (no masonry), large rooms, and many windows. Near a major intersection. With old uneven streets and car tires striking like hammers over the pavement.

Have all the naysayers ever experienced infrasound? It is very distressing, even at low levels. The building construction largely attenuates audible frequencies but the very low natural resonances and impulse noise is pronounced. Who cares what an SPL meter says when your body is distressed and in constant fight or flight mode? You ever felt the thump of an inconsiderate person's car stereo? This is much worse, and there's almost no recourse for the affected, because it's all about the numbers or lack thereof. Infrasound is also factor Environmental Illness/Sick Building Syndrome.

  3. Re:Sounds familair on Magnetic Nanoparticles Fry Tumors · · Score: 1

Who the hell would moderate posts referencing Kanzius. It is entirely relevant to the discussion and is evidence of a trend in direct treatments of cancerous tumors. While Kanzius uses metal and nonmetal nanoparticles and an RF current, this treatment uses layered shells of magnetic materials which self-oscillate (so it seems) in the presence of a magnetic field generating heat from within rather than what seems to be ohmic loss through applied current.

Having read the poor abstract and the article at sciencemag, I haven't been able to determine the exact parameters of this application to the point of getting excited.

  4. Redundant: facitities already in place on Warner Music Pushing Music Tax For Universities · · Score: 1

My sister's school, Baylor University, among many universities encourage the use of the Ruckus service which already accounts for any licensing issues, including those with Warner.

    From Baylor's "The Lariat" article
Millions of songs free for collegians
    KATE BOSWELL, Jan. 23, 2007:

"Ruckus avoids copyright infringement through its direct relationship with the record labels, Lawson said. Ruckus has agreements with major labels, such as Warner and EMI, as well as several thousand independent labels."

I will not substantiate my opinion, as it's been covered any time in the last ten years a post about the RIAA comes up: In making this statement, I posit that warner's desire is only to monopolize their music rather than encourage the use of well-developed, mature service which are already in place.

Mod parent up, please. I look for this exact reply in every thread I've ever seen about cell phones on planes, and this is the first time I've seen it in my years online.

  6. Calling my Senator was painless and FREE on EFF: 48 Hours to Stop the Broadcast Flag · · Score: 1

I called my senator (Sen. Hutchison) this morning and it was painless. I followed the script at this URL, elaborating a bit on what the broadcast flag is and how it would affect me:

Oh, and thank you to my employer for paying my long distance charges ;).

  7. Pros and Cons on Integrated Graphics from NVIDIA Back In Style · · Score: 2, Insightful

The IGP on my small form factor PC was one of the reasons I made the purchase. It was one less thing to worry about. I use my PC mainly for work, development, browsing and the like, with the occasional games and LAN party.

I had hoped to make good use of the IGP, but unfortunately, the manufacturer went cheap on the analog portion of the output. The screen was very blurry, and caused eyestrain trying to read text. I had to buy a cheap MX440 (a small upgrade, too, ok) to get rid of the bluriness. The output on the upgraded video card is very clear.

Attention manufacturers! Don't screw it up this time! If you're going to give us decent integrated graphics and use it as a selling point, don't skimp on the outputs, play it off, and force us to upgrade anyways!

(BTW, the SFF system is a Shuttle SN41G2 from a couple of years ago; Shuttle support did not acknowledge me when I asked about the poor video output/bluriness.)

  8. Cost/Value on Comcast Raises Bandwidth in Shot at DSL · · Score: 1

Is the increase in speed that big a deal to the casual user? Are they really going to notice the difference? Probably not. This is just marketing scheme to steer people away from alternatives and for Comcast to pad their prockets in the process.

Comcast is robbing the majority of people by only offering a high speed/high price option. I would like Comcast to offer speeds for the web/email only crowd (the majority?) at a reduced cost. Would we ever see that? Probably not, as it might be in the best interest of the customer and not in Comcast's best interest.

I'm sorry for the angry tone, but I'm disgusted to see people wastefully pay for what they do not use.

  9. Provoke thought through broadcast profanity on PBS Feels FCC Chill On Censorship · · Score: 1

I know it's late in the thread, but whatever.

I say let them put all the profanity, sex, and violence on American television that they can.

I say let TV be filled with the abominable things we've been discussing. That way when people get sick of it, they will turn off their televisions, stop being so complacent and have room to think, possibly improving life for themselves and their neighbors (via politics, religion, or whatever it is that people don't like to talk about).

If it takes people to be offended to make them turn their TV off and start caring about what happens in real life, that's fine by me.

It could be a change for the better if TV "goes to hell".

  11. blind sheep on Politics Follows Code · · Score: 1

In light of all things political that I see happening around me, including DeCSS, big business, income taxes, and just looking at the size of the US government compared to the foundation of the US Constitution, I have become ill. That spirit of patriotism has overtaken me tonight, and I think I may start writing now for what I believe in. I would however now like to expand things further, especially in response to the post about political parties. There is more to republican, democrat, libertarian. I think politicians are the same. As I said to a friend earlier this morning.

"our government has been turned into a smelling heap of filth that reeks of corporation and corruption. it no longer is of the people, by the people, and for the people. it is run by politicians and other vultures seeking money and power, who will rip through the dead carcasses of the people they watched die in the shadow of their own greed."

I think people as a whole care about the things that will impact them, and much goes on behind the backs of the people that we do not know about. Most people I assume get their news and views from mainstream media, that is the broadcast networks, TV news networks, and local newspapers. Call this what you will, but I don't hear much or even a mentioning of a lot of views. When you read only the paper, or watch the world news after dinner, you limit yourself to what they report, which is not enough to get you involved. Apathy and ignorance by the population has caused America to be put into the hands of I am sick of the federal government, and big business, as the greedy have taken away liberty. I have always enjoyed the electronic frontier as a place where views can be shared widely and quickly, without interference. Now I care, and I have an obligation to let others know about it.
