Sure, I'll remember the big flashing ad that pops up over my browser... but will I remember it fondly? Have there been any studies about people avoiding products because of negative ad experiences? (X-10 anybody?)
Watching a show at a different point while it is being recorded is a nice feature of using a random-access memory device, but this is not mentioned in the patent. The patent specifically talks about watching one show while recording another. I'm arguing against the patent not against all the stuff a TiVo can do.
And what do you gain by trying to be inflammatory?
So just recording one channel while watching another isn't patent-worthy, but choosing a format in which to store the movie suddenly makes it patent-worthy?
Quicksort has been around for awhile, but maybe I can get a patent on implementing quicksort specifically in Fortran?
There is absolutely a population problem. Saying "If you're so concerned about overpopulation, why don't you kill yourself and set an example?" is immature and inflammatory.
Right now, the current population problem could be solved by solving the resource distribution problem, but that's short-sighted. If population growth continues at its present rate, the planet's in for lots of trouble within the next couple centuries.
There's nothing wrong with procreation, but [intentionally] having more than 2 children is irresponsible.
So you'd give out the personal information of a user to some unknown potential psycho over the phone? Where's the evidence that this "mother" is saying anthing that's true?
The teacher took his teaching job knowing what the school's policy was. It was his choice to take the job (or leave it if he disagreed with that policy). But high-school students are required by law to attend school until a certain age. They aren't given some contract which they have the option of signing -- they are forced.
Their stock price has been rock-bottom before I posted, and actually was gaining, albeit slowly, as the postings went forward, so they didn't lose any money because of statements that I made.
Maybe. Or maybe their stock price would have gone much higher if you hadn't made the remarks. Personally, I think you should be able to say whatever you want, but don't assume what you say has no effect.
It was unclear why Symantec waited until now to reveal the patents, which were granted last year
The reason seems pretty clear. If the first thing you do after being granted a patent is run out and use them against your competitors, then you've pretty much admitted that you knew about prior art and kept your mouth shut about it. This way, Symantec can say "look, we've held this patent for a year, and then stumbled across a company that we think is violating it".
Removing all whitespace from code (or formatting code into ASCII pictures) is useless and annoying. Congrats to the winning submissions which were formatted reasonably and were still obfuscated.

I know this story is about python and not perl, but whenever anybody discusses one the other is bound to come up in conversation.
Which is really unfortunate. The two languages are extremely different. They are similar in that they are both very dynamic and both begin with the letter 'P' -- that's about it.
No, it means all NP problems could be solved in polynomial time. Even if the original algorithm is O(n), the reduction could still take O(n^k) time.

Ok, I just registered kadobe.com.
Any suggestions for what I should do with it?
Why would you sign something unless you agreed to it?
And why does Yahoo care? French law isn't the same as U.S. law.
That's something I've never liked about the GPL. Personally I prefer the No Problem Bugroff license.

We're not talking about everything you can do with a TiVo. We're talking about a patent.
And tell me what about this method isn't obvious. MPEG format? Now there's a clever choice for storing video...

These have nothing to do with each other.
Yeah yeah, Preview button...
I think you mean "Stop copying>/i> other's work". Issues of Right and Wrong aside, copying is different than stealing.

Except for those distracting animated gifs, which I guess are just about all of them...

They also confuse 2 and 3 dimensions of movement. A spherical engine provides 2.

I can see calling Java or Pascal or even C++ too structured, but Python? It's an extremely flexible language.
Dare we upset the balance of nature by bringing back species that were naturally made extinct by the various industries of the world?
