Take this principal and extrapolate it to all social behaviour; the result of all this surveillance is to produce an overwhelming conformity and predictability in the social behaviour of a population. And never underestimate the importance of predictability to the powerful.
It means that anyone skipping down the street is not merely being silly, but "suspicious."
Inventor, scientist and lawyer Thomas Jefferson believed that lighting one candle from another does not diminish the orginal candle, but augments it. Nor can the second candle be lit without an original flame.
Composer Beethoven believed that artists should deposit their works in a large warehouse; from which he could withdraw those that he needed to create his own art.
Thoreau believed that a poet should live on his poetry as a steam planer is fired from its shavings.
I believe that thinking and ideas are hard work done by individuals upon the the previous thinking and hard work done by other individuals; and given back to them in gratitude. . .
But I understand that tradesmen think differently.
This hasn't been so much of an issue with respect to television. The number of outlets providing video feeds is, relatively speaking, quite small, and what they play is sufficiently uniform (or self-created) that a bureaucracy like ASCAP is unnecessary.
The bureaucracy that is "unnecessary" is called "BMI."
Time will tell, but I'll continue to put my money on Apple.
I'll put my money against MS, but that isn't at all the same thing as putting it on Apple. I'm getting a bit tired of the issue being treated as an Apple vs. Microsoft thang when there are so many other players already in the field; and dozens more to come.
It's just a music player. Certain brands of music player always dominate the market when they first introduce new technologies into the field. They also always become just another brand of music player ten years or so down the road when everyone else is doing it. Fashions pass. Commodities last.
I haven't purchased my first such device yet. Odds are good that I will within the next year. It's nice that the Zune has rounded corners, seeing as where I think MS can stick it, but Apple isn't going to see a penny of my money either.
"get out the vote" initiatives that come out every election cycle.
Back in the day this process was pretty straight forward, all it took was five bucks and a bottle of Wild Turkey per vote.

So it's not a total recall...
Even better, the recall took place before the units reached the retail market.

Doesn't mean that the spooks listening to you don't get a giggle out messing with you.

. . .other than going and living in the woods I'm not sure what else to do..
If you own the woods the building inspectors come in and tear down your hut for not meeting code, then tax you for it.
If you use the "public" woods they now have woods cops to hunt you down and throw you out, then tax you for it.

No.
On the other hand it might go a long way toward explaining why there seem to be so many people with defective brains shuffling about.

It works.

In theory there is no such thing as an impervious system. In practice what you do is try to make it too hard to perv.
