Professional artists (not me, but my colleague) are going to stick to platforms that support CYMK, because that's how they ship their stuff to the service bureau. Hell, we don't even need it in GIMP if adobe would port photoshop to the linus. (and why port or switch to linus at all if win2k works just fine for it? because win2k still isn't stable like the linus.)
the problem with saying "in theory, communism works" is that you're resting your theory on false/unproven assumptions - that the greedy, power-hungry parts of human nature can be redirected into the positive, communal, selfless acts required by communism. for life. and for the life of your children.
if you actually factor people into communism, it doesn't work even in theory. it's almost like saying, "star trek warp drive works... in theory" - sure, if you just listen to the foofy explanations on the tv show, it makes sense. but when you factor real life back into the equation....
that nanotech by default would be open-source.. since you can always examine the little guys running around doing their jobs. sort of like building electronic circuitry, or an automobile, it's hard to avoid the real-world openness of what you're constructing.
how would you construct a closed-source nanotech device? could you do so by making it self-destruct upon contact with the atmosphere (not very useful)? but wouldn't any copy-protection built into your nanotech devices suffer from the problem of being able to be disassembled by other nanotech devices, or by the same machinery that built them?
is to compensate hourly for your time on the pager. If you're not being given even a paltry sum (say, $10/hr for on-call time, plus OT for having to go on-site), then you're being screwed. It sounds like you're being screwed.
If your management isn't receptive enough to make a change in policy to compensate you fairly for this PITA job (i had to wear a pager for several months- fortunately didn't have to respond to it much), then I'd say you should find a way to get out of pager duties entirely or find a different place to work. One that'll pay you what you're worth.
(but is any amount of money worth giving up hours of precious sleep/coding time/bedtime-fun to step a user through making Lookout2k work at 11pm?)
I've been put in charge of producing the stats for my company's websites. I'm using Wusage, which is plenty configurable, scriptable, very well-priced for its functionality, etc., and I've set up a number of exclusion-filters.
What I'm blocking out so far is:
our company's internal IP traffic
images
funky robots like Keynote-Perspective that the old webmaster had let loose on our sites.
This gives us some numbers I have confidence in (even though they're 10x less than the numbers the old guy was producing through Webtrends), but I'd like to find out what others are doing for making their own web stats.
But they give you definite theories and experiments to test said theories. What politician can posssibly offer me the same? But that's precisely why they're interesting to non-geeks (and especially interesting to geeks with social skills on a par with normal people; eg, the kind of geeks who "get" what it means to be a social being) - because you don't have fixed theories that X is 1 and pKa is.00479: you have fuzzy things like voting patterns and perceptions and other characteristics that, if you can't see them, seem like religious poppycock ("why would people vote for a charismatic but unqualified candidate??" why, indeed...)
But you can test them! You can see why poor Al Gore's going to lose the election, despite his being a brilliant thinker compared to Bush - because Bush can charm the pants off our uninformed and easily-swayed voting public. Who will think of the children? Bush! (yeah, I just saw such an ad.. what does it mean, scientificially? nothing! but it's still effective - <blink>WHY??</blink>)
Science may be more precise, but at the same time, it's a limitation that bores a great many people... it's too bad most geeks such as yourself think that that's the end, not the beginning.
well, umm, maybe that's why you make more than anyone else in your family. i'd wager that most people could if they wanted to work the equivalent of 2-3 full-time jobs at once.
Actually, the Winchip was an all-purpose X86 chip that gives decent performance for its cost. And it runs incredibly cool - you don't even really need a fan (I use one just to be extra-safe)...
Winchips have found a home in the I-Opener, as some others have mentioned, but also in the hearts of those of us who'd otherwise buy Cyrix (another decent brand if you're willing to trade performance for money...)
Nah, if Visa rejects everyone for a minute, then all those millions of people around the world sit there for a minute until the box reports "Error" - and then they try again.
None of these systems is completely reliable as it is, so that minute doesn't really matter now anyway.
Speaking of this, I'm preparing a slightly more generalized version of the forum at http://www.hatelife.org for consumption - I'm using it in a couple of non-angst-related projects and it works out really well (even though I'm calling it "the hate engine";).) It's simple enough to be super-straightforward for general consumption, and it's pretty decently organized.
Sorry, just had to plug it.:)

What happened to the 30 hour work week? When the hell are we going to enjoy this 'prosperity' that we've created?
I don't know about you guys, but I enjoy it right now. I'm paid hourly, and I'd much rather have my time than the money they give me for it. I've put in some overtime occasionally when there's a big project I get really into, but I choose when I put in that overtime (and, of course, I tend not to overestimate my skills, so I allot enough time for projects.) You can choose your job; if the enjoyment you get out of life is worth it, you'll take a lower-paying or a less prestigious job in order to spend more time doing more of the stuff you enjoy.
Whoever quoted Tyler Durden was right. You're not your job, you're not your Acura, and life sure isn't about possessions. Lease what vs buy what? Who cares!
BASIC is a great starter language, because it lets you do exactly what all programming is: tell the computer what to do - and it does it very, very simply. Data structures are important, yes, but only to us people. The real meat is that we tell the computer what to do; everything else is eye-candy and syntactic sugar. Trying to get kids interested in arranging their bytes is like trying to teach them good martial arts - they like the noise their fist makes when it slams into the focus mit, but they don't care about body positioning for better power; just like they will think it's neat if their POKE 54328,15 command changes the background color, but won't care about arranging their integers in a linked list.
You can get kids to practice good body positioning, or make linked lists or whatever, but you can't make them care about it like adults... they are still kids, after all.
installation - the macos can be installed, and it doesn't act you a god damn thing about your / and/usr and swap partitions.
interface - linux can open all manner of unix filesystems, pc filesystems, amiga and other misc. filesystems, but how? through obscure mount commands? the mac makes it easy by automounting.
hardware: god bless apple's near monopoly on hardware!
internet: well, netscape crashes equally quickly on either platform.
and another thing! why is it when people say "i have the following apps for my new X," when X is a PC they list games and useful apps like photoshorp, and when X is a linux comp they list apache??
Well, here's the deal. Just speaking a sentence doesn't make it valid. In my high school, I heard people saying to one another all the time, Let me axe you a god damn question! but anyone would tell you that's wrong.
You don't "axe" someone a question, you "ask" them. Duh. No amount of repeating this will make it right, either.
Answer: the kids involved in making that child porn. Those kids are going to be pretty fucked up, and it's going to take them a lot of effort to overcome the incredibly damaging effects of being molested and being photographed. Think this is bogus? Try talking to any adult now who was molested as a child. Ask them if they liked the experience.
"does the availibility encourage more molestation of children or discourage it because their impulses are satisfied other ways?"
I'm guessing it doesn't discourage it. I'm just speculating, and I encourage any of the social-sciences slashdotters to correct me or give me new insight, but here's why- if these mythical "dirty old men" (remind anyone of the linux-powered grandma?;) ) can sit around and get all the child porn they want off the net, it satisfies their impulses now, sure. But being able to get it, they come to realize that someone's making it, and it begins to legitimize child porn more and more in their minds. And then they decide that, rather than being consumers, they could be producers, too. After all, if you're into kiddie porn, and you can get it, and it's OK to get it, why shouldn't you be able to make it, too?... but again, just speculation.
I know I'm all for free speech, except where child porn is concerned. Why? Same reason I'm opposed to rape porn. Same reason I'm opposed to snuff porn. All of those things involve a form of coersion that is very damaging to the people who really suffer from it. S&M is not damaging, because it involves two consenting adults. (Duh.) Rape porn involves one man (or woman, to be fair) fucking up a woman's life forever. Child porn involves the same- an adult, fucking up a child's life forever.
And no, I'm not a bleeding heart, nor am I a victim, but my friends have been, and what they've gone through isn't something I'd wish on anyone.
why is it that being a good athlete or someone who is able to socialize is not considered a laudable goal, while being a disconnected and incapable loner who can fiddle with computers _is_ ?
just an idea.. but shouldn't you really be able to do both- play with computers and play soccer or tennis?
and above all else- talk to people?
frankly, i don't care how shy or introverted you are... if you're incapable of being a social animal, then you're missing out on a lot (including.. yes, jobs. we won't hire people who don't look you in the eye, talk the talk, walk the walk, and do everything well... raw skills are nothing when you can't chatter, too. welcome to the real world.)
For one site where this doesn't seem to be the case, check out hatelife.org. A lot of the journals are an entertaining read- most people's lives are so comically tragic, you can't help but chuckle at their woes.
I check it pretty regularly now, just for people like chickenfinger and frippy. It's funny. (better than a lame-ass user-made comic strip, anyway.. you should see what people send THE AUTHORS if you want to see real crap.)
actually, it would help. i just moved into a new place and got engaged and i'm soooooooooo broke it's scary. i've eaten nothing but sausage and ramen noodles for weeks now (save for an occasional visit to someone else's house). it's scary. i think i'm going to die. i don't want to be like this when i meet her parents (this weekend)
"Would you say I have many pinatas, Effe?" "Oh, si, El Guapo!" "Would you say I have... a plethora of pinatas?" pause... "Err.. yes. Yes, El Guapo, you have a plethora of pinatas!" "Tell me, Effe, what is a plethora?" "Ehh?" ....

To speed up the FPU, they removed the on-chip spell checker. Slashdot, as you can probably tell, is being powered by them already.
That's the key (emphasis mine)- GNOME is a DESKTOP environment. PDAs are HANDHELD. DESKTOP != HANDHELD.
Winchips have found a home in the I-Opener, as some others have mentioned, but also in the hearts of those of us who'd otherwise buy Cyrix (another decent brand if you're willing to trade performance for money...)
It's a Winchip that's currently powering fojar, hatelife, and yellow5.
