  1. Similar Issue with Belkin OmniView on Making Mouse Wheels Work w/ a KVM? · · Score: 1

Belkin OmniView SE 4-port, Logitech optical mouse. Works with X. Works with Windows 95. Works with Windows 98. Works with Windows 2000.

Under Windows XP, with the Logitech driver, the wheel works initially. After switching to another system and switching back, the wheel no longer works.

With the MS driver, the wheel works even after switching but, pressing the wheel down for a third mouse button click isn't supported.

Sounds like a driver problem. I have just been assuming that it was too unusual a problem for anyone to bother fixing.

Looks like a good project but, it isn't a particularly novel idea.

Review the archives (including those from the list at its previous home) of the PanoTools maillist (PanoTools@Yahoo.com.) A number of folks on that list have been experimenting with building similar equipment for several years.

  4. RIAA's Ulterior Motives on RIAA Grabs Student's Life's Savings · · Score: 1

We know that RIAA is deliberately misleading people about the economic impact of on-line file trading and piracy (see http://www.guidance.net.nz/article.php?article_id= 123 and http://www.azoz.com/music/features/0008.html .)

The real danger to the RIAA's business is their disintermediation. That is, new technologies, especially the Internet itself, have the potential to eliminate them as the middlemen between artists and consumers. They have even admitted this (although I can't find a URL for that article at the moment.)

At this point, many (perhaps most) of the small artists refusing to associate with the major labels view online file-trading of their work as free advertising. The piracy angle is just the best way the RIAA has come up with to sabotage that. If they can stop the technology, they can slow their demise.

RIAA is mis-using the government and the legal system in an attempt to protect their on-going revenue stream. The question to ask is "why are they meeting with so much success in this clearly un-American, unjust activity?"

  5. Re:Go after the businesses who pay spammers on Forty Percent of All Email is Spam · · Score: 1

I recently read and article (which I cannot currently locate) about how some people had tried responding positively to all of the spam they received. They learned that most of the companies/products were not legitimate. They were actually just a cover for a way to harvest and confirm email addresses to sell to other spammers.

So, for a significant portion of spam, it looks like there are no legitimate companies.

Anecdotally: I have had an email address that has been in use since before spam was invented (yes, before "Make Money Fast!") I recall one bit from the first couple years of the spam blight that went to great length to sell me some golf balls. However, there was no valid return address, there was no web address, there was no phone number or street address, the headers were forged - in fact, there was no way to respond positively to the message, even if I wanted. What was the point?

According to my mail filter, 70% of my email is now spam. If all it does is consume my resources and doesn't even constitute a legitimate solicitation, from a technical standpoint, I don't see how spam is distinguishable from a denial of service attack.

Forgive me if this has been covered in elsewhere. Dealing with the incoming spam takes so much time I cannot read all of the comments ...
