Between/. and doing my own studying for the field I wanted to enter. That was all I did at my last job. And this one appears much the same way.
I swear to god, I tell this company my goals (they are a techie co) and how quickly I can get there, and how motivated I am, and they stick me in a job where all I am doing is billing out for them. They tell me that I need to sit on my desires and goals for 6 months while I bring in more money for them on a project where I don't want to be and isn't even remotely close to my goals (Unix Admin). I am debugging java code, and don't even know java-- and don't want to go in that direction yet anyways! Poor management of resources is the ailment this company suffers from!
I have DLS with USWest (quest, whatever). I received my 'modem' (actually a cisco 675) only a week after I ordered it. Service has been mostly good for me.
I live in an area that only opened up late last year.
I talked with a USWest guy once about service and such, and he told me that the problem with at least this area, is that the population is growing so quickly, that they cannot go into older areas and upgrade/update the infrastructure.
I know this issue is widespread, but really, if you use any provider, they will be at the mercy of the major phone provider as that is the company that owns and lays down the cabling.
I think I am getting it now:). It isn't the fact that people will not go over now to this new OS, but that they fear change. Example: We have an MRP in place (I hate the thing) that is unreliable, poorly written, and was never finished (management stopped the project before it could finish, from what I hear). So my boss and I are looking for a new ERP system to replace this thing. Our users hate our current system-- until they realize they have to change to a new system. People complain about what they have, until presented with a newer option. It is the minority out there that actually either changes things or embraces those changes quickly.
Win2K will become the de facto of the Windows world, simply because it is the next release. People are scared as hell at it and its god awful requirements-- but too scared to do anything else but complain. That reason alone allows MS to abuse its situation.
If we as a people had any smarts to us, we would learn to adapt to change better. Survival of the Fittest.
BTW, I am not an MS employee, MS fan, but am a user and admin at work. I use Linux at home, and on this box at work. My future is with the *nix world, not MS. I hope the rest of the world follows that lead.
But the children-- they can read this post. And you used naughty language, and you referenced body parts, and you are threatening their future. Oh my god, what will we do?
We must take away the internet for the sake of the children and feminazi's. We must strip our language of male words like BITCH AND SLUT AND WHORE AND PMS AND SALESPERSON AND ANONYMOUS COWARDS!!!!
Tell me the truth. Did you vote for Clinton. Because if you did, you contradict your useless verbage. If you did not, and voted conservative, then you go against your fear of children/woman discrimination stance you hold.
"You and your little fuckwad here are having fun and games at the expense of sexually abused little girls."
I am in stitches here. "what about the children, what about the children?" Oh my god, Moderate this up and funny as HELL. I won't be kissin your black hole as I might find your previous victim still alive inside.
OOOOOhhhhhhhh, did you know that radical feminism is french for 'whore on the street'? Just and FYI.
You're killing me here. You say that open sourced programmers are being used as slaves by corperate businesses. And then you wonder why you are given flamebait status?
I don't understand your logic. Let me clear some things up here.
Most people who post here, and read here, are typically users who are a part of, or sympathetic to the open source community. We either work on it in OUR OWN TIME, or we use it and act as cheerleaders and critics to those who do the work. The saying goes that we are our own worst critics. This drives the community and makes the product better. When you slam and take away the freedom to 'Innovate' (as your company, M$, loves to claim it does - innovate), you stifle creativity and competition. You tell all of us that we are slaves and slave supporters. That is an opinion, and for that reason, Slashdot allows you to post. But that you tell us what we are not, that begs for a flamebait status.
Second, to everyone else, RedHat is not the M$ of the opensourced community. They have their own direction-- the same attitude that drives this community. They don't conform, and they just happen to be successful.
Lastly, Slak rocks. That it requires such a hands on approach to do what a few mouse clicks might in another distro, gives the user a real feel of the OS. I think all Linux users should try it out-- go back to whatever else you have before after you have tried it -- This will give you a better grasp on what it is that you use -- namely, the center piece of a movement that business and marketing people don't understand.
DMG, I ask you, have you tried the product that we hype/slam/support/enjoy/trash/are passionate about? If you have -- it was with the wrong attitude.
First, I was not being gender specific, and second, how do you know what gender I am? Get off of your horse and quit your political correctness attitude. It is this liberal bullsh@#$ that divides us, not a general term, that, up until a few years ago, meant: Mankind: THE HUMAN RACE If you ain't human, I'll withdraw the comment.
The only concern I have is how will they generate revenue? Will Slak Inc have to become a RedHat type of vendor to grab more marketshare- as well as gain income?
Here, at this link, http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWS2000/beta/hall/99a ug04.asp, the 'big guys' in charge of the OS stated
""I'd much rather see the most reliable and usable operating system than the most whizzy-bang operating system," Cutler says. "To increase reliability we have to make choices. For every 10 bugs we fix, we may introduce three more. But do you want to ship with 10 bugs, or do you want to ship with three?"
"Do you want one more new feature," Lucovsky concurs, "or do you want to fix more bugs?""
Man, I guess I'd better quit using *nix now, huh? What a sham. How Clintonesque, or rather, Gatesesgue....
I have been working with Linux now for a year and a half. I am not a programmer, yet. My focus has been on networking, and understanding the way the hardware works with the OS, as well as certain server applications(Apache, Sendmail, etc).
I read this and thought that he was far more that he said to be, and expected the response from everyone else to be one of 'finally they get it'. I am glad it didn't turn out that way.
I am not a fan of MS, but it is true they have done a lot of things right. Ease of use as well as apps that actually help users are things they did right. Until we address those issues on the client and home user sides, Linux and BSD will not become a fan favorite.
I still use windows for browsing the web. I use BitchX for IRC chats. I use StarOffice and Office2000. I see Windows as a great client, and good print server, and I also see Linux as a great server and router. I can't answer on the developmental side as I am barely out of the starting gates:-)
It's nice to see fellow users let their guards down and admit Linux isn't everything-- cause it isn't. My guilt level of having a windows box at home (and a linux box) is lessoned.
I love history, and it fascinates me to see how passionate people can be about their beliefs. Racism and Religion both bring out anger and disgust, when the goal is the exact opposite.
Remember that the word 'slaves' comes from the use of slavic people during the middle ages as slaves. When the black plague (bubonic plague) wiped out everyone, there was a shortage of workers. The solution? Seafaring nations went out and looked for alternatives. African tribes offered slaves at a cheap price, and the Europeans took them up on it.
There was no discrimination based on race until after that time. The Romans, Arabs, Persians, and others all enslaved peoples from differing cultures. White owned black, black owned white-- it didn't matter.
I will not apologize for being who I am. If I am 'black', I am proud. If I am 'red', I am proud. If I am 'white', I am proud. No white man owes a "Native American" or "African American" any apologies unless that person has done something wrong to the other person, or, as a 'racist', something against their race.
Martin Luthur King Jr's speech applies even today-- and it works both ways. He didn't try to teach 'hate the white man because he suppressed us', he taught that everyone should be equal, and have equal opportunity. That includes Whites, Blacks, Indians, Latinos, Chinese, Japs, Everyone.
Get over your anger. No one holds you back but yourself. No one.

'THINK OF AN OBJECT and watch it appear before your eyes.'
I want a new convertable, a new house, a couple of those Alpha boxen running linux clustered together connected to a 56 inch screen.
And when I get pissed at Katz for his articles of wisdom, I want an AK-47, and Jon Katz himself.
Mmmmmmmmm, think of the possibilities. And the pr0n, oooooooooh sweet pr0n.
"To be honest, we'd open source just about anything the community wanted."
Then open source the GUI engine for OS/2. This would give Linux an alternative to X, and one that is less resource hungry.

You are completely discredited by this remark. Take your feminist shit and shove it back up that black hole of yours.
You probably voted for Clinton- huh?
