how many times is someone going to bitch about having install over the internet, and how many times is someone going to have to point out this URL... http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/support/
on the 7500 the integrated modem is a winmodem, and they offer various pcmcia modems, some win, some hardware, and as for the comment about the dongle, i believe they still offer a 3-com x-jack pc card modem.
>However, the support calls should be way fewer with the stability of Linux....
MY GOD, MAN! have you ever worked tech support? how many of the calls to tech support do you think involve actual real problems? if the linuxcare support dell offers is free like their normal tech support, then people will abuse it just the same.
You should be aware of their displays. I have two dead pixels on the screen. Dell claim that it's within their manufacturing tolerance, which happens to be 5 dead 'uns with 1 square inch! Odd that magazines never tell you this.
well, actually(or at least when i worked for them a few months ago) the tolerance was 3 within a square inch or five total throughout the screen. if you bitch and complain enough you could probably get it replaced for 2, just be aware that it would be replaced with a refurb part and the problem could be worse than before.
faced with s similar dilema when my university shell account expired, i found it impossible to locate a *decent* isp that offered shell access(the only one around here that did only had 33.6 dialups and was $27 a month) the best solution i came up with was to get a dialup account with whoever and then for $4 a month get a shell account at ultrashell.org, or is it.net?
sure everybody wants to live forever but given the current population explosion does anybody else see why this could be a "Bad Thing" i mean it could be reasonably argued that the earth is overpopulated already. and if people keep being born and suddenly the mortatility rate becomes next to nothing...overpopulation, overcrowding, famine, drought, food riots, soylent green is made from people!!!!
>now i do feel the price differnce between the >450 and 500 is somewhat excessive but it's by no >means the "$1,000" you speak of.
oops! just checked the apple store again, it is a $1000 difference, but that's for the pre-configured systems that contain other upgrades besides just the processor, if you choose BTO and just upgrade only the processor it's only $350 more.

read macosrumors, g4's are expected to hit gigahertz next spring also, the key words here being "promising" and "expected" but when comparing two completely different chip architectures try and take differences in mhz speed with a grain of salt. i have a 9 month old g3 400, it's faster than a snake on ice, my brother has a brand new Dell 500, i set it up for him, right out of the box it feels sluggish compared to my mac. at work i use a dell optiplex 400, it *crawls* compared to make mac. now a lot of this has to do with the difference in the OS, yet you claim mac os to be worse than windows, when was the last time you used mac OS, system 6? also, i make the point of my brother's computer being right out of the box, this is important to note because any idiot who doesn't understand the OS he's using can fuck it up and bog it down over time(see my comments on linux later).
>With Apple, you get a relatively closed system, >an OS that is even worse than windows, crappy >ISV and IHV support, and you pay $1000 per 50Mhz >increment?
and if you bothered to learn anything about the architecture before slagging it you'd see that the 400's use the older yosemite MB while the 450's use the new sawtooth MB, now i do feel the price differnce between the 450 and 500 is somewhat excessive but it's by no means the "$1,000" you speak of.

i have a sense of design and aestetic, you have a sense of homophobia. takes all kinds...
>ps. Why does no body talk about Linux on Apple >Hardware? Do you guys really think that Apple's >12 year old OS is as good as Linux?
well, yes. linux has a use, mac os has a use, i wouldn't run a server using mac os 8.x, but i wouldn't run linux as a desktop os(yet). linux simply won't be ready for the desktop untill it has a *quality* GUI, i dual boot my mac, when i run linux i run CLI and it's screamingly fast, but when i give KDE or Gnome a go i have to periodically open up my case and make sure somebody didn't replace my G3 with a 68k... but again, i'm no linux guru and see my previous comment about any idiot being uble to mess things up.
other than problems with drivers not installng properly(which i blame more on the general crappiness of windows) i've run into less problems with the montego's than the other sound cards dell ships.
i used to work a crappy marketing research job where we did phone surveys for hilton. i can't imagine the questions this would spawn. "how would you rate hilton's space toilet on ease of use..."
any idea what the cost of a night's stay would be?

>Given Quicktime's bent to associate itself with every known media type upon installation,
start -> settings -> control panel -> quicktime -> file type associations -> uncheck to your hearts desire. there, that wasn't so hard now was it?
all easily modifiable with regedit too.

what resolution were you running it at? a "feature" of a lot of the dell lcd's is that they only display properly at 1024x786
um, isn't civ out for the psx?

speaking of signs and stuff in the background, anybody else notice the billboard advertising Bachelor Chow? only old fortran made me laugh harder.
well, it worked for the apple I.
jeez, i must've submitted this like a week ago. i'm not saying that somebody didn't get it in before me but if so why the delay?

#72911
only got 170kB transfered before it crapped out.
usb support will be included with linuxppc 5.0 but afaik not even 5.0 will run on the yosemites.
granted that's without a fan but damn! something just isn't right when i can cook my jiffy pop over my processor.
