  1. non-MS .NET languages on De Icaza Responds on Mono and GNOME · · Score: 1
Here's a list of .NET "language partners" - it includes:

    COBOL

    Dyalog APL

    Oberon

    Scheme

    Eiffel

    Pascal

    SmallTalk

    Fortran

    Perl

    Standard ML
    - I assume they're also targets for mono.

The worst case is that GZIP doesn't compress it at all but has to add some meta information to say how the file should be expanded (or not, in this case) - in other words, it makes it longer.

I would be interested in reading decent Fantasy novels written from a non-Judeo-Christian perspective as well if anyone knows of any and could post titles.

Try the real thing - The Epic of Gilgamesh is short, surprisingly easy to read and was probably first written down about 1900 BC. It's certainly not Judeao-Christian but there is some interesting overlap between the Sumerian gods and the OT.

If you like this you could go on to Homer - I can't recommend a particular translation of the Odyssey but don't let the sometimes ornate language get in the way of lots of violence, sex, drugs, monsters and heroes.

but the CD-ROM is UKP 175.00 plus VAT (US $295) so $550 per year is not necessarily the cheapest option.

I'd love one, don't know how I'd find the time for browsing all those cross-references though.

but inserting an attribute requires special instructions (a minimum of 2 elements)

    try

All this and more at the excellent xls-list FAQ where you'll find that XSLT has a strong user base and a wide range of mature implementations, ie competing on performance now rather than robustness or completeness.

But it really is different to non-declarative languages, so expect fun if you still enjoy learning.

see that little word "numbers" in the middle of that wonderfully contorted syntax? This patent only applies to systems which are simpler because they use a numeric keypad to follow links - so watch out Lynx users, breathe free (and click free) the rest of us.

Think of Melissa - the other strength that Linux has v. Windows is that you don't have Microsoft designing weaknesses into the system, trying to bring forward the day when the "join the crew" hoax becomes a reality.
