In gentoo you can do an emerge --update system and emerge --update world, to update your system to the latest version. It uses emerge to install new packages (+dependencies) as well. In effect it kind of works like apt-get in debian, with the addition that it compiles the packages from source. All in all a much more flexible tool than up2date.
Add some truetype fonts with the spadmin program. And make sure you have anti-aliasing turned on. Extra --> options --> View (not sure i'm using a dutch version) --> anti-aliasing.
In The Netherlands this system has been used for a couple of years now. It's not exclusively used for computers, but for other household appliances as well. From walkmans to refrigerators. The amount you pay depends on cost for recycling the product. For a walkman you pay somewhere around 2,50, for a refrigirator this can be around 75.

We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is Futile!
The only problem with optical mice is that they use quite a lot of power, so the battery life of your laptop is decreased quite a bit when you use an optical mouse. Other than that they work on most surfaces, even your pants! BTW i have both an MS Intellimouse Explorer and a Logitech Wheelmouse. With both mice i get almost identical results in power usage and surfaces on which they work.
