Steam itself was in the works (and possibly still so,) of being ported to Linux. They focused on the Mac version, however, and wanted to get it out first. I haven't heard anything recently about it though. :(

Bah. Real multiplayer gaming is done over the internet anyway. :P When you want someone sitting next to you cussing about the way you play, just play the console version on your PC. (Assuming you have money for a big enough screen.)

to reply to someone who said about it being needed as proof. I saw a bunch of what were essentially repeats, so I'll just throw this out there. DNA tests were done. Not firm enough evidence for you? Al Qaeda themselves said he was dead. The type of people who are thinking he's alive are probably the same ones that think 9/11 was conceived by the government.. Make of that what you will, but I think the sane ones on /. will concur.

They will never terminate access to games you've paid for- even if Steam for some reason went bankrupt, they'll release your games DRM free. Unless you commit financial fraud through something like a charge back, they will not "terminate your access at any time," and even then they'll give your stuff back once you actually pay them. You might be confusing Steam account access in general with the VAC system, but it will only prevent you from joining VAC secure multiplayer servers, and if you cheated then you deserve it anyway.

Steam is non-intrusive though, and lets you do what you want with what you buy. They're not trying to lock you into anything. I've always appreciated VALVe for their look on Steam- entertainment as a service, not a product.
