As someone who decides what stuff to use to build sites, I avoid java like the crusty, copyrighted, slow crap that it is.
I've been involved in projects driven by servlets, and they were all a total nightmare: java doesn't like 8bit chars, java is slow, java this, java that. who has the time?
For a few things, I'm sure java is actually fine. But certainly not for web development, gawd! There are better, um, freeer choices: http://www.php.net.
