I work somewhere (a large chip manufacturer) where we use USB serial adapter cables all over our testing lab to interface things like thermal controllers. Since these are COTS items we have no control over what chip is in them. If this update had bricked our entire lab, it would have been a disaster and a total show-stopper for our testing schedule until we located (and understood!) the problem and fixed it. Personally I think it was a childish way for them to handle this situation and I'm glad they saw reason and yanked it back before it created a total disaster.
I second this. I turn all that crap off whenever possible. It's just a waste of CPU cycles and annoying. I don't need Pretty Pretty Blinking Lights in an OS, I need an OS that is rock-solid reliable, how about you work on that, Microsoft?
I have a perfect, 100% effective solution to this problem: I don't, and never have used 'The Cloud' in the first place. It's a stupid concept, it's poor data security, it's a waste of money, and you're asking for trouble if you use it. Store your data some other way that you have 100% control over, don't let complete strangers do it for you.

If you lose a limb the associated sensory nerves get zero stimulation, as well as the associated area of the brain. Wouldn't those nerves and that part of your brain 'turn up the gain' and experience more 'noise' in the absence of 'signal' (hence 'phantom pain')? Then you attach something that provides a 'signal' again; 'gain' goes down, S/N ratio goes up?
