Man, I agree with you. Drivers were a piece of shit as I recall from the Rage 3D times. However, you have to give it to ATI that after years and years of dismal drivers, they have actually REALIZED it themselves (my guess it has started to bite them where it hurts, ie. profits).
They publicly announced the Catalyst driver initiative and have been working hard on making reliable drivers. It has started showing, as the 7XXX, 8XXX, 9XXX cards' drivers are quite good.
It is hard to give a second chance, but maybe it is worth it. (It was worth it for me...)
Are you insane? What guarantees that this cute little company with shiloads of cash will not start going after Linux? They can afford legions of lawyers for decades to come...
Remember people: software patents are BAD. In fact they are worse than Microsoft. Got it?
One more thing, would it be not easier to write a fax server system, in which your contractors can fax in the signatures, and it would organize it and archive it automatically?
You can have the field contractors dial the server's fax number plus the order number, and the server would store it accordingly.
This would utilize already technology that is present everywhere (ie fax machine) and would not put any burden onto your field contractors (in regards to carrying/learning/purchasing new equipment/software)
Can you afford to have the contractor a) lose un-uploaded PDA b) have the battery run low c) other catastropes...
If you can , then it is ia good idea. Make sure to GPL it, pleeez?

No, that's not what capitalism means. Capitalism means, for one thing, that the moview theater can't take $1 from 5 people who don't get popcorn to give to you for $1 intead of $5.
You are trying to tell me that about 4oz of corn, the butter (imitation with the super special artery clogger) and the 5c worth of electricity (to pop it) somehow adds up to be more than 25c? Are you sane?
If the popcorn is $5 at all of the places, it means only either collusion or monopoly. Take your pick...
Of course this would be slightly different if there were places where you can get 20c popcorn (obviously subsidized)

You are technically correct, however if RIAA does win this case, nothing would have prevented them to file on the order of 100,000s in DC at a bargain price. This way, the cost is higher, so they might be statisfied with 1000-2000 filed locally.
Actually technically that is comminism. Socialism is just a "not-perfect" precursor to the Communism.
And yes, free music would be nice. And tha arts *IS* being subsidized, until the Thief-In-Chief bankrupts the all of the social institutions of this country.
I was actually thinking about more along the lines of rcs, where you check out the file, and it gets locked for all other users. When you unlock it, then some else can get hold of it. One at a time, is what he wanted to do, but using messaging.
This is the first real usable solution to your problem. All the rest (and your question too) are treating the symptoms. While that is the norm currently accapted in the medical art, we in computer science tend to doctor the cause. So to solve your problem you should create semaphores that would would without human interaction and allow only one person to access the module at one time.
CVS would work too, but it has no usable end-user (lama) interface. It is where this above soultion shines, easy on the eyes, and fixes your problem. My 2c goes for this.
What makes you think that it takes 36 seconds to reboot their systems? That's an average time spent per flight -- we don't know how many times the systems are crashing per flight.
Incidentally, thay have reduced the length of the test flight 23.3 fold (=14*60/36) to prevent accidents stemming from computer failures. However this was not disclosed in the presentation.
An average flight now lasts a total of 60 seconds, where taxiing takes up 25.5 seconds. It takes.5 seconds for the system to boot up at first.:-)
Maybe ypu could somehow lock the files for extended times, paying some discounted fee for it, ie. $0.25 a day or $0.99 forever. This way you could even space-shift the music to your ipod, etc.
Yes, you can get a DRM boggled version for 99c a track. I do not consider it a good deal, since you can get the CD elswhere for 10 a pop too, without and DRM.
BTW, have you heard about the crap Apple got itself in, when people found out that as soon as you move to Canada, your iTMS songs will not play anymore? As a matter of fact they only play while you comp is in the USA locale and timezone...
I does not seem inconcievable to me that employees of Snapster 2.0 would run out and buy a hundred more copies of Metallica's CD when seeing the demand rise for them? Suddenly the wait can be reduced 100 times (still 3 days).
Snapster 2.0 could use some logistics software to anticipate such demand, and make plans to counter them, such as having several thousand copies of CD shipped to them for the official release? Suddently the wat is reduced to less than an hour.
You can counter this, by making the price change with demand, kind of like a bidding, whoever offers more money for it gets aq higher priority in the queue. 1CD = $15, 100000 plays * 0.05 = 5000 dollars = enough income to cover up to 300 CDs.
Plus if you have a wide audience, with eclectic taste, it is not likely that more then 2-5% would want to listen to the same song at the same time, ie your example assumes at least 2 million customers!
Of course this is clearly theft. If RIAA decides to subpoena the customer list, and raid everyone's house who cancelled CD shipments, will likely to result in better than 50% of such customer base found guilty in a criminal court...
You would not have to download the music, all of it is available to you 24/7. However space-shifting (or recording the stream) would clearly violate the term of usage.
50 songs at 5 min each, that is 250 minutes. That is 8+ hours a day. In other words for less than $100 a month you can listen to music for all your waken hours. And if you charge $0.02 per song, than it becomes $40 per month for continuous music...
I think you might have misunderstood Cringley. He still proposes that Snapster 2.0 purcheses physical CDs, before making them available.
It is not the members who make the CDs available, rather the mutual fund itself.
But that brings up another point, why would not the members mail in their CDs, for which they get download credits. this potentially will result in a giant collection of crapfest (aka Miz Spears), but it will address the general bad taste of public:-)
Especially if you never agreed to the EULA, since you have never installed it on your comp, rather you have analyzed it before-hand to see if it fits your security criteria.

Boot disk does not cut it. You need a full fledged Win98 installation, as the USB hard isks are only supported from windows and not from boot disk.
You could use a small linux bootable cd, like knoppix. That one already has fdisk, etc. Hopefully USB mass storage supoort as well.

Especially if you never agreed to the EULA, since you have never installed it on your comp, rather you have analyzed it before-hand to see if it fits your security criteria.
Especially if you consider how the CCD megapixel means G+R+G+B, unlike in print/display terminology, where it means (r,g,b).
Example: 3MPixel camera has 0.75 mill red + 1.5M green + 0.75M blue sensors. In display/print technology it would be called ~0.75Mpixel resolution.
When your LCD screen resolution is 2Mpixel (is 1600 x 1200 UXGA, it means it has 6 million light emitting transistors.)
The best digicam has 24 million sensors, or 8 million dispaly pixel equivalents. That covers the 8.5x11 prints at 300dpi. Just enough.
