  1. Playstation heat and bugs are nothing new on PSX2 Memory Card Recall Ordered · · Score: 2

I have one of the old 1001 playstation models, and always had problems with fmv skipping, but, after adjusting the fbias screw it works just fine. The one thing that ticks me off is the until I bought one of those fan stands for it, i damn near had to adjust it weekly. now I'm down to about once every 6 months. It still ticks me off though, I thought having to put in extra cooling was something for the pc when you are overclocking, not to run a standard game console. what next? will 3dfxcool be selling peltier units for the PS2? I hope the flaws are fixed before the US launch, but I just canceled my preorder. I'm not paying $300 for the same problems i have from a machine five years old.

As for the DVD and memory card problems, hopefully a software update will help. Just wish you could update psx software. I love Gran Turisimo 2, but i would have gladly waited an extra month or two so I could get %100 complete, and not have all the collision detection issues.

  2. Jon Katz and Chicken Little: Separated at Birth? on LonelyNet (Part Two) · · Score: 1

I understand why the slashdot community seems to have a hatred for Mr. Katz. His articles show a very limited understanding of the whole open source and internet community. His articles seem to be more of the "Don't you see how the world is treating you bad?" variety. On the whole, the world treats us pretty good. Yeah, maybe we dont get to sleep with supermodels, or were social outcasts in high school. Big woop, life aint perfect, but most of us work in one of the quickest growing professions ever, and the world seems ready to pay us for our knowledge and expertice. We have access to move information quicker than anyone thought possible. Life is not as bad for the geeks of the world as Mr. Katz paints it out to be. So what if a stupid little study says we are isolating ourselves. Is the structure of the world going to suddenly change because of it? Are companies start paying less for computer professionals because it stunts socialization? I wouldn't be on it. The sky is not falling, and the world (with the exception of the NSA, the CIA, the RIAA, and the MPAA ;)) is not out to get us. No Chicken little, the sky is not falling.

  3. Languages, Natural and programming on Why Linux Makes Sense for India · · Score: 1

We all have seen how differences in programming languages generates different solutions, some better, some worse. I think the same logic can be placed on natural languages, they provide a different structure for humans to understand their world. Someone who speaks a language that is barely related at all to the predominate language in programming culture, English, would have a different perspective of the logic puzzles inherent in programming. Learning the different semantics in Japanese helped me immensely in programming, not because source code is written in Japanese, but it made me more aware of how different languages are suited to different things. This is why we need to internationalize linux, not just because we need more linux users, but we need more linux users that grew up with a different language and culture than the standard Western European/North american linux standard.
