I'm in serious danger of repeating myself here, and I know that more and more people are joining the Linux revolution, with differing levels of historical knowledge, but there's no need to parade that ignorance in front of the whole world. If you don't like Debian's distro, don't use it. But if you don't approve of RMS's ideology, and refuse to use any of his SW, then that's GNU/* out for you. I don't know what you use alongside your kernel, I use GNU/tar, GNU/ls, GNU/etc. I have the option of using commerical or other non-GNU OSS software. But I don't know of anyone who has bothered to write ls with a GPL... The difference between what BG3rd and RMS think are good for you are: BG: Whatever I spew is good for you RMS: Whatever is free is good for you Personally, I'm using RedHat with GNU tools. If you're pro-capitalism (and why not? My Dad is), then use a capitalist OS - incl. M$, RedHat, others. Personally, I'm a techie and somewhat socialist. Linux (Remember, it's a KERNEL, not an OS, UTILS and APPS) suits me fine. It depends on what you stand for. But I can't see what you stand for which RMS prohibits, unless it's ripping off GNU code.
Hey, I'm kinda getting on a roll here. What's the problem? It's really disgusting how, in spite of the fact that a large segment of the community has very serious and valid reservations about Stallman's leadership, nevertheless their voices are essentially banned on Slashdot. I don't know the guy any more than I know you. What have you given OSS? The GPL is viral. It restricts freedom. This is not only a justifiable view (and IMHO correct), but a rather common one. Yes, GPL is viral. A creates OSS software, B adds to it; it remains OSS. C adds to that, it's still OSS. That's a Good Thing. In what way CAN it restrict freedom? It restricts your freedom to rip off someone else's source and claim it as your own. Have you *READ* www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html? What IS IT that you want? Other people to write software for you to claim your own?
I don't know that he's outed himself as a Socialist. I don't know that you've outed yourself as a Capitalist. I know which I'd prefer! I certainly don't know of RMS advocating piracy of shrinkwrapped software. It's odd you don't include URLs to back up any of this... Debian -> Linux -> OSS in general owes a massive debt to the FSF and RMS for pusing these issues since (it appears) before you were born. I think I'll boycott you until you learn to respect the community.
such as the illegal sale of guns, explosives, controlled substances, and prescription drugs, as well as fraud and child pornography. From http://www.pub.whitehouse.gov/uri-res/I2R?urn:pdi: //oma.eop.gov.us/1999/8/9/11.text.2 I'm *so* glad I don't live in the USA. Does Mr. C really intend the FBI to posess the ability to trace pornographers and never use it against innocents? You may post something anonymously, infringing none of the above, but if the FBI are interested, and have the "technology" then they can trace you. So if I post this "Anti-USA" message, they can trace me if they want... This isn't naivete, this is quoting the above "Bad Things" as an excuse for funding the policing of the entire internet (incl. Monica posting on a.s.a.r!!!)
I'm currently on a Sun Microsystems E10,000 (e10k) course... studying Sun's answer to the Mainframe. It does basically all that the author likes, as well as being Unix, so you can do shell tools, etc, and be in the Unix environment we all like so much.
Okay, so it costs UKP1,000,000+, but so what?!! Solaris is (basically no cost), Linux is free. The power's there, plus the flexibility. Also, if you know Linux, you know Solaris.
Sorry to burst your bubble guys, the world does NOT revolve around the USA. Europe is not some small country over the water.
US products are subject to US laws. 128-bit encryption, supercomputers, ICBMs, you name it, are not subject to US laws IF THEY'RE NOT DEVELOPED IN THE USofA!
Beowulf was developed on the net. 99.95% of it is raw Linux, developed by one L.T. and cronies from all over the globe.
This discussion is not entirely redundant, because this issue has to be addressed for US-only OSS projects, but it does not apply to Beowulf. The US does not have juristiction to impose regulations on its "export". Possibly downloading it from a US-based website may come under US law, but not from a local mirror.
Sorry again to bring you down to earth, but America is one country amongst many, whatever your media may tell you.
Now okay, I've just visited the site s/he linked to, it's not my cuppa tea, far too OTT. I don't want to be linked with that; For some reason, I've not got any statements of my beliefs on the net; I've got a friend with a good statement whose URL I can't find at the mo.... mail me for the link... Steve.

By which you'd mean, the 6000 years some Bible scholars have interpreted. They have interpreted this because the Bible only refers to the past 6000 years. www.redhat.com only refers to the past 8 years; I don't think they believe the world started then!
> Religion has and will continue to be used for power and control. And as a crutch for people that can't handle reality.
Computers have and will continue to...... etc Web Browsers have and will continue to.... etc
This can be true; people will use various things as crutches, or for power and control. I can't see how the thing being used can avoid this?
> The first evidence for me that religion is used for control is in Genesis 3:16. Where it states that women should be servants to men. What a crook a dog doodie.
It also slams men in Genesis 3:17-19 (note: three verses, not just one). This is the explanation of "the fall", ie, the simple fact that men and women are not as good as we should / can be. Okay, the presentation here kinda reflects the culture of the time it was written; it can be seen as an "explanation" of why snakes crawl, why childbirth is painful (or so they claim:-), why life is hard.
> You have a right to believe what ever you want but Jesus spam is stupid.
Spam is stupid. Therefore *-spam is stupid. Surely slashdot is about our right to believe in open source. Okay, JC is offtopic here, but slamming someone then saying "but you have a right to..." is downright inconsistent.

PTL* for that!

Yes, but he wasn't using the posessive form... it's just you = "It is just you".
