  2. Licensing? on Windows ATMs by 2005 · · Score: 1

Right now most Windoze products are licensed on a per-user basis... NT can be licenced by how many people will use it, etc.

My Question is, are banks going to have to drop an insane amount of money on licensing? I.E. x dollars for every ATM card that is in circulation from that bank? Think about how much more ATM fees would be.

Ford has filed suit against General Motors for making something that also has four wheels and can transport passengers, by way of an internal combustion engine.

A Ford spokesperson has said: "There will be more lawsuits in the future against other vehicle manufacturers, but we felt like we needed to go after the biggest fish first.

"We realize that this will be met with some hostility, but we are doing this to protect a consumer, we feel that anyone else making such a product is watering down the concept of a 'vehicle' and that having this protected will allow us to continue to innovate.

"Also, we are in talks with SCO to discuss a possible licensing scheme, whereby all owners of non-Ford cars can pay a fee to have their cars properly licensed for Ford's IP."

  4. another public school on How Much Manpower Is Behind Your Help Desk? · · Score: 3

I will apologize in advance for my horrible spelling.
I work at a public school system with 9 schools all hooked to a WAN. We have 6 people in the Technology Department. 1 is our Director who spends most of his time paying bills and taking care of the other administrative bs. We have one person who has been spending the past 8 months writing bids for our various projects. Another person who used to be the main helpdesk contact is now enrolled in college and isnt there for most of the day. Which leaves about 3 people to feild calls and what not. (during the day there is usually another student or two in the office answering phones as well). We are way shorthanded as we are incharge of this network with about 1750 nodes (another 500 are scheduled to come online this summer). We are also incharge of all the a/v stuff in the district, the phones, the radios, the card access to the buildings (which is a bitch), the pagers, and just about everything else (there have been times that our staff has typed things for secretaries, answerd phones for the switchboard and other insane tasks.) Currently there are almost 300 open issues in our system and we average opening about 120 per day when school is in session. Everything is windows 2000/nt4 with the occasional 98 box floating about. (we have alpha servers in our office which the big man is switching out for intel machines so we can run win2k on them... he didnt like my suggestion of putting linux on them. : (. ) all and all we need more hands... there are going to be two job openings posted in the Boston Globe this sunday for anyone interested, we are located ~30 miles south of boston... visit our website at Watch out it sucks (the webmaster cant design). It takes about 35 minutes to get there from boston or so. I would love working with another /.er so dont hesitate to throw an app in. : )

i think the ability to semlessly interact with other systems would be grand. I work for a school system whose users demand many different things. the elementary teachers want macs to run many of their programs the high school teachers want pc's to teach everyone how to use microsoft orfice (i shudder at this but i dont design the curriculum). The middle school teachers dont seem to know what they want. We pay astronomical amounts of money to microsoft for their damned back office licences for our nt systems... i have been begging my boss to let me turn the alpha systems we have into linux boxes instead of trading them in to compaq for intel machines... but he doesnt want to deal with that. 'to many issues could arise' he said... cant really question him there... they could, dont know if they would but they could. i think a client could be made for mac boxes, win boxes, and whatever else you want to dream of... open source would make this implementation a lot easier then having to reverse engineer an entire network protocol then have to implement it only to have the company sue you because you reverse engineered their hard work... (DMCA rant in another post). I say go for it... would be real nice not to have to spend a month of my time this summer swapping out alpha boxes for intel machines.

It seems that the DMCA is the most menacing of the two laws, since according to the law, the only way service providers and institutions can avoid liability in lawsuits like Metallica's is if they bar software that could transmit copyrighted material.
i might as well get rid of icq, ftp, aim and any other 'file transmission' type program, cuz according to the DMCA they should all be banned anyway. what is to prevent me from sending some TMBG mp3s to my friend via ICQ.... nothing, so therefore it should be banned. gotta love the politics, "we dont know how to control it" "thats ok we will just ban it" "to hell with creative thinking" im sick of this bullshit.... oh well enough ranting.... i really should be writing that paper thats due in three hours. looks like i will fireup my mp3s and get some work done.
