  1. Based on some of his prior C++ work... on Perl6 Being Rewritten in C++ · · Score: 1

...I sure hope he's getting outside help. I have worked with some of the code Chip has author for Nielsen Media Research. I hope to gosh he's getting outside help if he still codes this poorly.

  2. Facts, facts please. on MP3s Causing Decline in CD Sales? · · Score: 2

Where are you listening? At an airport? MPEG Layer 3 is a substandard audio specification. Granted, the Blue Book CD specifications aren't the best way to record audio--hence the push towards 24/92 (Super Audio Disc, etc.) standards.

First off, you cannot possible compare the sound quality of these two mediums reliably. MPEG Layer 3 is not a lossless compression system. Played back though a computer with even the highest priced sound card you will never acheive the sound quality of a CD played back over even a moderately-priced audio system.

MP3s are the bane of high quality music lovers. Making music available on an inferior medium only pollutes the "gene pool" for people who treasure music and its faithful reproduction.

  3. Sorenson Codec on Prequel Trailer #2. Get it. · · Score: 1

Anyone got the trailer in another format? Can't find a playback utility for Linux that supports this codec.

  4. Divx is a waste. on How is DivX Doing · · Score: 1

Looking at the technical issues involved, you can't take your Divx disk to a friend's house and play it on their machine. In addition, what if Divx goes out of business? You are then left with a worthless disk that you cannot watch any more.

Open DVD is the only way to go. That's why there are so few titles available on Divx...movie studios aren't willing to support such a worthless standard.

High end audio/video manufacturers aren't making Divx players. We're talking Meridian, Runco, Theta, Pioneer Elite. Buying Divx is like throwing your money down the toilet.
