Prequel Trailer #2. Get it.
A bunch of people wrote in about it, but trailer #2 is out there-weighing in at 25 megs uncompressed, it's in Quicktime format, and supposdly takes a more general view of the plot line then the previous trailer did. Get it before the server dies *grin*. Update: 03/11 08:41 by H :The rumour is that this is the /last/ trailer before the release of Episode I. I'm salivating. What's to account for the obsession with the trailer, which shows not a wit of creative progress on special effects or production design?
Starship Troopers, Dark City, Wing Commander -- these are the SF movies that are defining today's era.
The Star Wars franchise is better left to what it's best at -- merchandising and licensing.

Star Wars (especially the first one) isn't science fiction. Yeah, I know it looks like it, but it's really a fairy tale. It's got all the standards-- a lost sibling, a dark knight, an evil wizard, a good wizard, magic, swordfights, faceless minions of evil, a quest, a fortress, everything. It's just got spaceships instead of horses (or sailing ships), swords that light up and glow, magic called "The Force," and so on. So, why is it good? Because it draws upon the cultural subconscious, and the mythical background we all grew up with.

Calling me a moron doesn't change the fact that QuickTime does many things that MPEG cannot, like play on most computers without requiring a special decoder card. Steve Jobs correctly asserts that anything Apple and Microsoft agree is in fact a "standard"; Windows + Mac = 100% of the desktop.
LucasFilm wants as many people the trailer as possible. With an installed base of 26 million on WinTel alone, that means QuickTime, even if it means it will "only" work under Windows or Mac OS.
If it's any consolation, the soon to be released Mac OS X Server runs QT natively. Since MOSXS is really a varient of *NIX, perhaps a Linux port isn't far off.

Newer PC's and Macs handle MPEG OK, but anything older than a year or two and you're screwed. That's what most people are still using too, unfortunately.

I completely agree with you. I'm not a huge fan of Microsoft's tactics on some things, but I do use their operating system. It seems that on /. that if a something is not Linux, or Linux compatible, it's crap. I agree that linux is a more stable operating system, and more robust in some aspects, but I use 98 becuase most of my applications for school and work are based on this platform. On /., if something crashes somewhere, or something goes wrong, it instantly become a Microsoft problem. I agree with Lucas for putting the video out on quicktime, because it has the greatest userbase, and is a very good way for showing a movie. Just because it doesn't work with Linux doesn't mean it sucks.
I don't think any of us have a _problem_ with George Lucas releasing the trailer on QT. But if he really cares about how many people he reaches why not release an MPEG version as well? Obviously there is a demand for it since there are already multiple MPEG versions floating around on IRC and private FTP sites.
Believe it or not there are even Windows people requesting the MPEG versions because, for whatever reason, QT doesn't work on thier system. This is not a Linux thing at all. MPEG is portable. Portable does not mean "it works with Linux." MPEG is available on many systems. The same cannot be said for QT.

While a lot of Elfman's "Big Movie" symphonic scores (esp. for Tim Burton's films) do sound very similar, if you listen to stuff like the score to Midnight Run or the Simpsons theme, he certainly has a fair range.

Fair enough. What's wrong with older versions of Quicktime (e.g., the Cinepak CODEC) that played fine on a low-end Pentium or less, running Unix, Linux, Win3.*, Win9*, WinNT, or MacOS? Why pick a newer version of Quicktime that only works on two OSes? Not as if this trailer _uses_ multi-language support, sprites, or any of the other moderately nifty QT features.

Ask a Microsoft employee about desktop market share, and he'll say that everyone is running Windows. Ask an Apple employee, and he'll say that everyone is running Windows or MacOS. Ask a typical consumer, and he'll ask what the hell an OS is. Ask a relatively typical slashdot reader, and you'll get figures ranging up to 10% for Linux. All of the above are wrong.
People still use DOS and Win3.1 on the desktop. People definitely do use Linux, FreeBSD, and even some of the proprietary Unixes on the desktop. Some people are even using BeOS. Amazing. Windows + Mac != 100%.

Thank You. As a Mac user who used to regard Microsoft as The Great Satan, many posts on /. have an eerily familiar ring. There are many corporations that are bigger, scarier and infinitely more sinister than MS. /. scares away far more people than it converts, ala Guy Kawaski's EvangeList (which I know is just fine for a lot of you, but it's not how you grow mindshare). I never stated MacOS X would automatically allow other Unixen to play QuickTime movies, but rather that it would perhaps make it easier to port. There is also a Java version of QT in the works that could facilitate same. And who are you, "A Mac User!", to speak for the entire Linux community?

That's what MS executives asked Avie Tevanian (Apple's cheif technical officer) to do to Quicktime for Windows. This conversation came out during the FTC Trial.
MS wants to control Desktop MM for Windows. Check out MS MediaPlayer. It's almost as good (on the surface) as the quicktime player.
Apple wants to use Quicktime and other technologies to build mindshare in the wintel world. QT is a big fat advertisement for Apple (among other things). If Apple can get a big chunk of Windows users to rely on a group of Apple products, then Apple has leverage to get them to switch.
So, MS wants everyone to use AVIs and MSMP. NOT quicktime. Apple is pissing on their shoes by continueing to develope QT Win.
Apple is working feverishly to get streaming QT servers working so that they can compete with MS and RealAudio.
Once Apple ports Colorsync (some damn fine color management software) and rolls support for it into QT they will have an even bigger lead on MS.
The only problem I have with Lucas using Quicktime is that I don't have a Quicktime decoder at work (where I downloaded it), and I don't have admin rights to install one.

I'm sitting right here, on a Mac 7100...which is much more than "a year or two" old, and I have no problems playing MPEG movies on the stock machine.

Bottom line is, Quicktime is NOT on every system out there, and while I do like everything about Quicktime, I can see where other people are coming from, especially here on Slashdot where most of the people are running Linux or other OS's other than the MacOS or Wintel. Anyhow, All I can say is that I can't wait for this film to come out; The special effects and visuals look like NOTHING I've ever seen before (did you catch the scene of the droids escorting the queen?) And it looks like Lucas has used the CGI stuff carefully -i.e - no cartoony-looking stuff- I think Natalie Portman will make a great character, and All in all, I love the entire look and feel of this movie. As for the idiot that tried to flame it, all I can say is that he must have been bored, or something and just wanted to start a flame-war - Poor bastard probably didn't even see the new trailer.

Quicktime still isn't a standard yet and you're still a moron. Nitpicking someone's grammar won't change that and only spotlights how much of a petty person you are. When one starts to lose an argument, they usually try to divert attention away from the conversation. But to suggest the guy was stupid when in fact, he only misspelled backpedaling (by only using an "e" instead of an "a") is just trivial.

that stuff about wanting to be able to support the majority is bullshit, with QuickTime he'll be supporting every computer with QT3, but with mpeg he'd be supporting every computer that can run a player (almost every OS has a freely available mpeg player). About old computers not being able to decode mpeg, THEY CANT DECODE THAT QUICKTIME SHIT EITHER. You think QT3 uses some magic algorithm that requires no heavy decoding? gimme a break.

Does anyone use MP3 (the best (mostly) open audio format)? Yeah, but there are _tons_ of people that are scared shitless about it.. Almost all other audio encoding routines are proprietary or suck.
For video, there's MPEG-1 and MPEG-2.. I really don't know why that's not being used more often..
When a QT3 player gets released for Linux, I'll quiet down. Until then, this is STUPID.
Also, just because MPEG-4 is _going_ to use QT as a base _sometime_in_the_future_, doesn't mean that it's going to help me at all _today_...

Umm.. With the MPEG version, what player does it work with? I couldn't get it to display correctly in xanim (all blocky and chunky 'n' stuff) -- I had to get mpegtv (which sucks, IMO.. SHAREWARE - eww..)

There is a command line player, mtvp, which comes with mtv. It is not crippled.

You can use the information in that and other publicly-available documents to start reimplementing the QuickTime API. Once you have the right portions of the QuickTime API reimplemented you can call Sorenson and Qualcomm and everyone else and say "Hey, wanna port your CODEC to Linux? It'll be simple if you already have it working with QuickTime!"
This does mean that a lot of CODECs would probably be distributed as closed-source shared libraries, but to me that's not a big deal at all. And all but the most unreasonable Open Source purists will prefer such a situation to having no advanced CODECs.
Really, I don't see why Sorenson or Qualcomm or Intel or anyone else would object to porting their CODEC if it wasn't too much work. (Particularly if Linux starts to gain significant desktop share.) But right now, there's no single solid multimedia target at all for Linux, so telling Sorenson that you want their CODEC on Linux would likely just garner you a confused look.
(Incidentally, this same issue applied to widget sets and window managers is likely holding up a lot of commercial application development. Commercial developers with Mac and Windows products don't want to decide which of { Qt, GTK, Athena, Motif, GNUstep, ... } to use for their product. We want a single API for building applications with graphical human interfaces, and we want all of those applications to look and behave the same. In other words, we want a solid target.)

The latest trailer is much better than the first one, both in content and in video/audio quality. The trailer is in QuickTime version 3 format, widescreen. YOU MUST HAVE QUICK-TIME 3.0 to play it. I put a copy of the QuickTime installation program in case you want to download it from here as well. We also recommend that you use FTP instead of a browser because we're only allowing 128 simultaneous HTTP connections due to the demand we experienced already. Go to http://www.countingdown.com for other HTTP download sites. Besides, FTP is more reliable. We strongly suggest using the WS_FTP client. If you manage to get an HTTP connection, download WS_FTP from the same directory where the trailer is, then download the trailer with WS_FTP.

What's wrong with older versions of Quicktime (e.g., the Cinepak CODEC) that played fine on a low-end Pentium or less, running Unix, Linux, Win3.*, Win9*, WinNT, or MacOS? Why pick a newer version of Quicktime that only works on two OSes?
Because CinePak blows goats. Hard. Really hard.
Sorenson Video acheives comparable quality with about a tenth of the bandwidth. A CinePak movie that looks as good as a Sorenson Video with a moderate data rate requires a data rate about as high as the actual decompressed video does.
On the upside, CinePak compresses well with our lossless compression and archival formats (.sit, .zip, .tar.gz, .bz, etc.).

I don't feel like finding the specific article to reply to, but someone complains about QuickTime not being documented in this thread. Nothing could be further from the truth; there are thousands of pages of documentation.

However, no, the modern codecs are not documented there. Those are proprietary software that Apple licensed from Sorenson (Sorenson Video), Intel (Indeo), QDesign (QDesign Music), Qualcomm (PureVoice), and Roland (GS MIDI).
Anyone hoping to make a QuickTime player not supported by Apple that would play those modern codecs would have to negotiate licenses with those companies.
And, yes, they would sue if you reverse engineered the formats.

Two companies that have been doing it longer and better, but they get the bullshit from you folks too.

Actually, Williams style tends to follow more classical lines. There are no parts of Jaws that follows any StarWars like themes, nor are there parts of others (don't have my CD collection here at work). However, if you listen to Holst at all, you'll notice a striking simularity to Mars, hrbinger of war. I think Williams does great on composing the stuff for the movies though. I bet if I played a bar or two from almost any SW movie, you'd be able to place it :)

It seems that on /. that if a something is not Linux, or Linux compatible, it's crap.
It isn't just about Linux. It is about formats that aren't compatible with any but two OS's. There are standards that are just as good as QuickTime that are open and supported by most every OS.
Lucas could have just as easily posted an mpeg version *along with* a QuickTime version. But he didn't. Why: because MS has such a strangle hold on things that it didn't make sense for him to. (If MS decided not to use quicktime, I bet we would all be watching an MS only movie right now.) If monopolies would stop breaking standards with their own proprietary crap, then this wouldn't be a problem.
But alas, the just want money and they take it from any sucker stupid enough to give it to them, and everytime that happens, they only get stronger.

It's not that easy. Quicktime isn't just apple's doing. It's about a dozen companies working together to produce the many Codecs that QT supports. So, it may be possible to get Apple to post thier specs, but not QualComm or Sorenson (who have video codecs in QT3) to publish thiers. The upside of this is that Apple is solicting the best technology for thier product and not falling into the "Not Invented Here" syndrome.

OS X Server does not support Sorenson, because it is not a desktop OS. It's only a server OS. In fact, Apple isn't even pushing it as a development platform. They would much rather have their developers be writing Carbon-compatible Apps at this point in time. Thus, complaining about having OS X Server not being able to run QT3 would be like complaining about Netware not being able to run QT3!

Yes, that's fine if I wanted to know how a quicktime file is structured, but it has no technical details or algorithms to reproduce the codecs. With this information, I could build a mean-ass QT file parser, but I wouldn't know how to decode the infomation contained in it. Those codecs are closly guarded corporate secrets. I'm sure that Qualcomm, Apple, Sorenson and other will let you look at them, if you gave them a few million bucks.. :-)

AFAIK, the Sorenson compressor used in Quicktime 3.0 has the highest quality-to-filesize ratio of current video codecs. I'm sure Lucas was impressed by the quality change when he replaced the Cinepak Quicktime teaser with the Sorenson Quicktime teaser. Also, I'd bet green money that Steve Jobs did some lobbying and negotiating with Lucas to have the trailer in Quicktime only. I'm sure if Lucas hears enough complaints (HINT HINT), he'll release an MPEG version.
As for people who are getting horrible frame rates while playing the 480 trailer, it's because the Sorenson codec is an incredibly processor-intensive compressor, and requires G3 or Pentium II to play back well. My poor little PPC-604 isn't even fast enough to handle the big trailer...
Ok, i guess you don't need a G3. I assumed you needed one to run the big trailer since my system right now is a 604 (not 604e) and runs at 180mHz...
How do those of you who haven't used Windows today seen this thing? The closest I've come is using mpegtv to view the mpg, but that's crippled shareware. Xanim (compiled with the extra codecs) can't view either the mpg or the mov. What did you guys do?

Well my crappy little PM 7300/180, with that same 604 and zero ram -- well, ok, 32M, but these days that's zero -- runs the 480 fine. You don't need a G3. Of course if you try to run it with other things open it runs like mung. Solution? Quit the other programs for the 2:30 that you watch the trailer... simple.

Why noy MPEG? Because Quicktime is available for Mac and Windows, which is pretty much the vast majority of desktop users. Also some pressuring by Mr. Jobs obviously played no small role. If you follow this link, you can see that Apple sent its boys over to help digitize the trailer. Who could the MPEG send? If Apple is going to put this work in, it should get some of the credit, right?
Anyway, whatddya think they cut this movie on, Windows boxes? Probably just repaying the favor to Apple for making such splendid computers.

I'm sure Apple offered Lucas large sums of cash to release the trailer in QT format only. It's a marketing deal. And who knows marketing better than Lucas (Steve Jobs is getting up there too). Lucas knows how big Star Wars is. He knew everyone on the planet would mirror the thing. He knew people would convert it into whatever format they wanted. Thus, Lucas got the cash and the exposure. Not to mention a huge ad and mirror on apple's web site. Not to shabby.

I think that it is a shame that Lucas, who has written and abided by a near religious obseviness to their THX theatre standard, who have threatned to not allow non-THX compliant theatres show Episode I, have released this trailer, 2 days before it comes out in theatres around the country, in such a degraded form of media in such a shoddy mockery of their incredible Movie Experience.
