Agreed! I do not like it when people take a book like 1984 or a movie like 2001 and say, "See look, they were wrong, our future isn't like that at all." When that wasn't the point or purpose of it at all. Any work of science fiction that strives to only be a prediction of what future will be is shallow and has little value.

It's not bait and switch. Bait and switch is "come get this tv for 5$" and then you show up and instead they push a $500 tv down your throat and hide the $5 tv from you, etc. It's also illegal.

In Apple's case they just finally realized they needed to charge for a service they had been offering for free for a long time in order to recoup some of their costs. Sort of like slashdot starting subscriptions, or any other website you can think of that used to be free but now has to charge or have ads everywhere to pay for itself.

Well, Steve Jobs just said basically the same thing as was reported here, but I didn't quite catch the whole thing. How it sounded to me was that .mac will not be forcing people to give up their mac.com stuff, but only an optional switch if you want all the extra features. Did I understand that correctly?

He keeps mentioning how everything he's telling us about right now works with your mac.COM e-mail and webpage, etc. You would think if they wanted to reveal a mac.net thing it would be done first and then show how everything else will tie into it. Not just lopped onto the end of the show and then everything you already heard changes.

Imagine the terrorists delight at a city bus carrying a huge bottle of the stuff.

Imagine a terrorist holding a can of soup that is really a bomb. Listen to what you are saying. Anything can be used as a weapon, and any weapon can be disguised as nearly anything. I suggest you watch out, maybe that glass bottle the guy next to you is holding is really filled with an airborne virus intended to wipe out everyone in a 5 mile radius once he unscrews the lid.

Just because something CAN be used for evil, doesn't mean that it doesn't have 1000000 legitimate uses that justify its production. Should we ban hands and feet next? Afterall, they can be very deadly weapons.
