  1. testing useful to insurance companies? on US Sues Over Genetic Testing for Insurance Claims · · Score: 1

Genetic testing maybe useful to insurance companies, because then they can refuse to, or hike rates, for genetic tendancy related ailments. but this defeats the purpose of getting insurance in the first place! As long as there's alternatives that are cheaper than the ones that genetic test, people will be the deciding factor in whether genetic testing is good with them. So companies will die if the buyer bewares!

  2. If it ain't broke, don't fix it... on GUI Research - Is it Still Being Done? · · Score: 1

That still holds somewhat true. The regular user doesn't like any changes to what they are used to, thus most programs stick with what people can already deal with. Basically the subject of this message is the point of why little innovation may be needed, or maybe even hurts the products selling points!
Some interfaces that are particularly perplexing to the average user are: Bryce 3D (too much candy, where do I press things!), MacOS (one button does everything, and nothing, but I'm used to a 2-3 button mouse), Blender (nice try, but somethings are still not in the GUI, means maybe the design was insufficient to handle change!), XWindows (it all depends on the window manager first, then there are so many different Widget libraries out there, like Athena, that don't work like todays fully functional GUIs). These are a few, I'm sure you can think of more...perhaps a list, with reasons is in order, or maybe for fun, a Slashdot vote for the hardest GUI to use that is still in use today (not including TUI/CLIs of course!)

  3. GL.so/xterm crappy lib + mouse FIFO dismay on NVidia and Linux Troubles · · Score: 1
I had to install ncurses 4.2 (shared library needed for xterm) and glide 3 (from 3dfx, for libGL) I have Voodoo 2 card in my system so getting glide was okay with me, but it should know when it needs glide and when it doesn't. I dunno why xterm had to have libncurses.so.4, I mean, ncurses 5 is out and installed with Slackware 7, not version 4! I also had no luck in "upgrading" I had to redo all my X11 subdirs by moving them out of the way, creating blank ones, and then installing the other X apps into the new directory structure.

Plus now their mouse driver doesn't work with fifo's like /dev/gpmdata (gpm -R) or /dev/jam_ps2:0 (jam imps2) which really pisses me off, because now I'm forced to use only their drivers for mice, which are limited. I have more mice supported in the imwheel version gpm of gpm (with support for wheels/sticks) than their internal drivers, and I can update the jam or gpm programs more often than we see a release of XFree86 come out.

I'm generally disappointed in both the video support from NVidia not being there, the mouse driver being too picky about FIFOs, and the dependancy on random libs that are not included with XFree86 4.0, nor mentioned in the docs. Lucky me I knew what to do to get it working.

write me if you need or can help with mice FIFO vs. XGrabButton methods for IMWheel and gpm or jam. -=<Long Island Man>=-
