Wheeled Mice in X?
Ryan Hughes
asks:
"Is there a way to use mouse wheels on a
mouse in X? I have a Logitech Mouse Man+
with 4 buttons and it would be cool to use
my buttons / wheel in X.
Any Suggestions." I thought I had read
about some success in this area for certain
mouse types, however, I can't remember the
URL. Does anyone else have more
information?
Wheel works fine for me long time. See above for details.
I've had a bit of trouble finding info on getting the Logitech MouseMan+ running under MetroX. I read through the README for imwheel, and it really only mentions support for Xfree86. Will I have to consider switching back? (MetroX is the only X server that would give me the exact resolution and refresh rate that I want:)

Actually I have a mouseman+ 4 Button, and I use the thumb button to give me a windowlist in E. You have to use mousetype = ms3 in gpm AND mousetype=IntelliMouse in XFree in order for it to work. If you use the MicroSoft driver in one it screws up the other. Plus you have to connect it to the serial port, because gpm doen't have a intellimouse ps/2 driver.
It's a four button mouse. (I have one and love it) I suspect that you, like me, probably have either A) an Xerver/GPM configuration that is not correctly configured to allow the fourth butto as a valid "click-event", or B) an XServer/GPM configuration that simply does not support the fourth button.
(My problem is B)
in X and the middle button does nothing.
;) In X, the middle button (button 3) is almost universally used for copying/pasting text. (in the Apps where such an action is relevant). Most of the apps I've encountered use it one way or the other. The GIMP,for example, lets you use the middle button to "grab" the image and move it. (Useful when you've zoomed in on image so much that you can no longer see all of it). In WindowMaker the middle button defaults to a window-list. In Netscape you can middle-click a URL and have it pop up in a new window. (Handy at places like Freshmeat ;). To summarize, when in doubt click to find out. You'd be surprised how useful that sucker is.
In X the middle buttons does plenty. Like, for example, letting me paste your comment above
Exactly. Some older versions of XFree86 don't recognize anything beyond button three, thus button four just gets picked up as button three
Hi guys,
I did as recommended by Xfree docs and nowmy Pilotmouse+ beeps when I scroll up or down. However, none of the appz can scroll?
Then I read the docs further and it seems u have to hack the config file for the different appz. Am I right?
This is a bit late, but you can just put "Auto" in the protocol field or Intellimouse. Then you add a line saying ZAxisMaping 4 5 . .Xdefaults so that you could use it in Netscape, but I forget where it is.
There was a page that gave you something to put in
Works fine for my NetMouse.
Anybody have any luck getting the scroll wheel to work on Trackman Marble+? I've tried imwheel and xfree86 built in settings.... nothing seems to work. So right now I have a non-functional wheel. Rest works ok though.
Hrm... Don't know what I was doing wrong before, but that fixed it. :-)
Thanks!
No, Logitech actually makes mice which have four buttons.

I've got a Logitech MouseMan+, which has four buttons (the three on top and a thumb). In Windows the thumb button can be used to scroll - click it and move up and down, or hold it and move the mouse up and down. This is the one thing I miss when I use X - does anyone know of any software, etc, that can enable this type of behaviour?

While these items are great for persons using mice which have flywheels on them, are there any known solutions for the Genius Netmice? The non-"pro" versions have but one "up or down" button in between the two standard (left and right) buttons. Now, before i get all the flames about how poor these mice are - i've had mine for a long time, and it is the finest, most robust mouse i have ever owned. So there.
Look for imwheel at www.freshmeat.net I'm using it for a microsoft intellimouse and the README claims it also works for your mouse also.
The imwheel program is made for this kind of configuration, see method #1 in the README.

it's back up. It was only down temporarily.
