I asked for a supervisor, who claimed that they only had m-stream cards in California. I told her to put on my work request that I wanted an m-stream card. I called sales later in the day, and she even called down to dispatch to verify that my work order had a request for an m-stream card. Very nice and knowledgeable installer comes out with 2 s-stream cards. He says, of course they have m-cards. His dispatcher made a note on my account saying that I requested an M-stream card and they should have delivered one. They had suggested that hopefully Comcast would just not charge me for the second card, but after talking with their billing department, the person said while they could do that, I would be better off getting an m-stream card so that I don't have problems every month, so now they are bringing out a m-stream card.

Of course, Comcrap is now charging you the same monthly fee as a stupid damn box, because they are calling it a "digital outlet" fee.

And after weeks of this nightmare, Cox suddenly stopped using SDV on the new HD channels and everything returned to normal. Why? Who knows? They wouldn't say. Perhaps a lot of people like me were complaining? (Every person using anything with a cable card was affected). Perhaps Cox even had problems with their own equipment.

This will be resolved in a few weeks/months by a Tuning Adaptor/Tuning Resolver -- I forget which is the new name and which is the old name. Its basically a device that will plug in to the USB port of the TivoHD coax port. It is still unknown, however, what pricing will be for them -- monthly rental, straight out purchase, etc.

SDV is not at all evil, it is actually quite necessary to get more channels out of existing bandwidth. Its just a few months too early!

Picture your Tivo now, with its great recording software. Compare that to the crappy software your cable company uses on their DVR. Well, the OCAP part of the CableCard 2.0 standard requires all hardware be running the cable company's software. In other words, your Tivo would have to be running Comcast/Cox/whoever's horrid interface instead of the standard one. At least, that's how I understand it.

Actually, I believe its pretty much the opposite. Although nobody quite knows whether Tivo's tru2way support will be on TivoHD (in cooperation with a Tuning Resolver/Tuning Adaptor -- I forget which is the new name and which is the old name), or some new hardware, tru2way will allow Tivo to have a box running Tivo software for standard Tivo interface, and then "hosting" software for OnDemand and other tru2way apps -- you still potentially get the bad interface for tru2way, but get Tivo for DVR. Tivo may even be able to front-end the OnDemand type stuff like the OnDemand interface that exists on ComcastTivo (which depending on who you listen to is already based on a subset of tru2way). The OnDemand interface on ComcastTivo is much better (IMO) than the standard interface.

Funny, because a lot of times, I find it to be the opposite. While I'm no huge MS fan, I think that Intellisense is much more refined in VS2005 -- and its simple things that make it such... ones that nobody else did, but its obvious once you see it. For example, the fact that when you hit DOT in VS, it goes to the last used property/method rather than the first one in an alphabetical list. I think that quite a few times, I want to refer to the last property that I uses, rather than having to scroll to it. Simple things like that.

It also seems much more of a pain to open an eclipse project on a different machine (at least with the Perforce plugin) than with Visual Studio (I just recently had to have someone else set up one of my Eclipse projects on their new machine, and we got into some sort of recursive look where Eclipse ended up creating subdirectories until it hit an NTFS limit for directory depth (which was a royal pain to clean up -- XP's fault, but still).

I think that much of it is preference, but each can (and should) learn from the other.

I'm anxious to see how X-Code (current and "leopard" release) compare... I've just started using a Mac as my primary development machine (and thanks to Parallels, I can run VS for existing dotnet and C++ development) as well as Eclipse on the Mac. I have not yet figured out how to begin integrating our existing Unix build scripts into X-Code to use it...
