How so? so let's say they put in some "hardware". When the program needs to validate the disc, the CD-ROM has to be able to read something back to the program. So, if the "hardware" communicates 000110100101011101, then those bits could be burned to a CDR.

The only thing that makes any snese is if something was put into a protion of a CD that ANY reader can read, but no burner can burn. I'm not really sure if an area like that exists, but i don't doubt it, as there is probably some kind of "information header" on the far inside of the disc. maybe a burner couldn't write to an area like that.

I thought the exact same thing when I read this.

If these keys are going to be used to verify that a CD is legit, the software HAS to be able to read the keys off of the CD somehow, otherwise there would be no point, since the software wouldn't be able to distinguise a copied cd from a legit one.

I can see something like this working for a console, if they wanted to modify the CD drive to read additional things that a PC couldn't. I can't see this working on a PC, though, because the disc has to be read/played with a standard PC cd-rom.

Anyone want to offer an explanation?

The would have gone alot faster had you loaded smartdrv before you deleted the files...

You should have a bootdisk made with smartdrv loaded by autoexec.bat, just to make sure this doesn't happen again

Um, you must have some other problem there. I have Win2k Advanced Server installed on my Pentium 100, 64MB of ram. I have IIS running (for perosnal use mostly), and an e-mail server. The machine takes about 3 minutes to boot. It is slow if I try to use IE or something, but as a server, it's fine, seeing as I have other systems with Win98se, Win2kPro, WinXP, and Redhat to use as clients. It could be some misc bug causing slow bootup, Win2k SP2 seems to boot lots faster though (I have an old beta release), so maybe SP2 will help your boot time when it comes out (soon). -Mathgod79

  6. Can we somehow downgrade to 2.95.2? on GCC's Response To Red Hat · · Score: 1

Hello, I am a relative newbie to linux, and I have not been having a good time with redhat 7.0 at all. I have not been able to get any kernels to complie with it, even when I changed the hostcc variable in the Makefile to kgcc. I have used redhat 6.x many times before to build a kernel with no problem, so I do not believe I have done anything worng. My question is how can we get back to version 2.95.2? I have tried to uninstall the 2.96 rpm files, but every time I uninstall one, I find that it tells me there are more 2.96 rpms left. If someone could please tell me how to iuninstall the crappy redhat 2.96 gcc compiler, and get back to the standard one, I would really appreciate it. If anyone could even give me a suggestion for compiling my kernel, it would be great. I am new, so if I have missed something, then i'm sorry, but I oculd really use some help here. I don't want to go back to redaht 6.2 because I have a geforce2 and soundblaster live (both of which redhat 7 detects and installs drivers for), and I liek the new sawfish manager for gnome (and don't want to have to install 20-30 binaries on top of redhat 6.2 to make it close to redhat 7. If someone can help, my e-mail is mahtgod79@hotmail.com. No spam please. Thanks
