The difference is that the customer does the choosing. MySQL doesn't choose who will get what licence, the customer chooses which licence they wish to use.
Ah, right, forgot to mention that. It is not possible that they both killed because each case placed the other brother in a different location and uninvolved in the murder, basically saying the other is innocent. Since they were individual cases, they did not effect the other case making them both guilty. Very bad performance of the US Judicial Dept. if you as me.
They need to figure out if they will agree to the GPL, or fight it. They can't do both, or if they do someone has to get the cat to chase its tail.
Why not? They are 2 seperate cases. IIRC, there was a case recently where 2 sons were each tried for murder of their father (parents?) and both found guilty, even though only one could have committed the murder.
You can't ask for that under GPL. You can however ask for money to download. Though they can't single out individual computers and organizations, as that would be anti-competitive behaviour. So they can't do anything about it except the post they just made.
Since when haven't we lived in it. The entire world is full of double-standards and self-contradiction which all ends up as hypocrisy. Do this in situation a, but this in situation b because each response will benefit the person performing the action.
It's all just bullshit, but what do you want? People will say the best of everything in order to benefit themselves. Why should this shock anyone? They are saying the best things of every situation. They are clearly putting things on the PR wire better than anyone else (IBM, RedHat), and until they other people involved do something you will only read about the success that SCO is having. Hypocratic or not. Just because something like this hits closer to home for some doesn't mean that it's any different than what most companies (or people) do.
The only thing that you (Taco and the readers) can do is stop "suckin it up and posting" and actually do soemthing about it. I wonder what an army of 10,000 penguin loving geeks could do...
I don't know about a whole department, but they must have someone that is searching to see what is interesting. This site generates money on commission - meaning, they get a piece of every trade. Some very nominal amount, but in large quantities it amounts to a VERY large sum of money.
They will most likely list the most popular topics. Like currently they have some contracts on "Recall Gov. Davis and xxxx person wins." I believe the ask/bid for Arnold is @ 50/50 , meaning that people are split in what they think will happen.
There is no real need for R&D. People create their own contracts. This site merely provides a legal exchange for them to sell (or buy) the contracts in. The site of course has a right to "suggest" contracts, by just putting them on the front page, but I'm sure the end user/trader can request contracts as well.
TraderSport is an online exchange based out of Ireland that basically creates a market on Future Contracts. Very cool because you can buy and sell contracts on a LOT of different things, ranging from Index (DJIA, SPX, etc) to Superbowl winners.
The beauty of it being a true exchange is that you can sell your contract at some point if you don't want to hold on to it anymore. Example: You buy Giants win 2004 Superbowl today which is valued very low, and say the Giants win their first game and the value goes up, you sell it make a couple of bucks and invest it elsewhere.
Let's see, a company makes a positive announcement, and it's stocks go up...what a shock!
SCO said that they got a client (a Fortune 500 company) so that means that they got more money, therefore reassuring the shareholders and yes the stock goes up. They make another announcement about IBM is shit, and it goes up more...that's the PR, and it didn't go up that much. Lastly, they released their 3Q profits and of course it's going to go up because they were up in the quarter due to it's new "unix licensing." It doesn't take a genius to figure out that positive comments make stocks go up.
Also, they've been selling stocks on a schedule that the SEC knows about and haven't done anything illegal, nor have the really big players been selling anything (CEO and CTO).
Stop your garbage talk and back it up with something more useful than a stupid link to yahoo finance.
The VP's entire stake was 1,200 shares. Not much when you compare to the CEO and CFO whose ownership each are over 200,000. The VP selling 1,200 is nothing. Everyone else that's sold anything has sold more than that in one lump.
1. The general education of India is more technical and scientific than in arts and such. Therefore a larger interest in the more "geeky" technical things. This is a big generalization.
2. Given the existance of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) and that it's tougher to get into there than it is MIT and UC Berkely, it just re-itterates #1 above.
3. And of course, the fact that the GNP per capita in USD is $380 per year makes things tough to learn or use anything that costs a significant amount of money. Now, the $380 is very low and is mainly this low because of the VERY rural towns and villages. In the city it is significantly higher, but not enough to call the average high or rich.
4. Given low income and abundance of people, anyone doing any job will have to do it their best, therefore they will try to use the least amount of resources in order to accomplish the most. Using something free helps in this respect as you save on capital - a very important resource.
This post might seem as a very one-sided post, but I can't think of any reason why MS would be at all useful here. If someone doesn't even know how to turn on a computer, using XP is going to be as difficult as using a Linux flavour.
Actuall, the GNP per capita in USD is only $380 in India. The data is a bit outdated, but things haven't changed much in 6 years. And since the Full Version of Windows XP is $299, that only leaves a family with $81 for food for the rest of the year...Oh, and the computer too...
(or any other word(s) that means Free Software/Open Source, etc)
I don't understand how the poster of this article goes off and talks about how the police and fire deptartments all started and then compares it to FS. Why? Because these were public services that were needed by the people for their own good and for the better of the country and the society. This wasn't something that needed competition to stay alive. At this point it is a basic need. And it was then too, we just didn't realize it.
FS is NOT a basic need and it needs competition to survive as does the entire Computer and Software industry. The Gov't shouldn't make it a "pulic service" type of industry where all most public software comes from the gov't (it wouldn't be public anymore, now would it?)
Sure, the Gov't can subsidise some costs by providing funs and grants to some people/companies/organization for developing software (even it is to be put out under GPL), but this isn't an industry that should be seen as a public need. Gov't shouldn't control this, it shouldn't promote it, nor hinder it. Gov't should use what is best for it, and we (me and you, the programmers, the users) should user/program what we think is best.
This works for Apple because they actually produce QUALITY products - their level of attrition/triage isn't as high as... say... Dell. Or Gateway (God fucking forbid...)
That's a poor comparison. Why? Because Apple's beta-tests are usually software tests, and Dell/Gateway sell you computers, not software. What are they going to beta-test?
This would work if you said Microsoft (who also does beta testing on their software, but piss poorly)
Now, Dell, I called their Customer Support once, 98 I believe. I got the Michalangelo virus and what that did was on reboot override my MBR and also wiping out my partition tables. Therefore, I lost everything, and this virus was also rumored to burn the MB Flash RAM. I called Dell (though my warranty had expired) I was able to get a very technical person on the phone right away and they walked me through on how to reset my motherboard and see if it will still work (since that wasn't in the manuals) and it worked like a charm...though I had to re-install everything, but Dell was rather helpful...then.
I guess after the tech boom died, they stopped hiring real people and now ship all their tech calls to a very cheap place or something.
I think they all think it sucks, because every tech support call center says that the answer to their problems is that they need to reboot their computer. And it works, but no one ever knows why...
Sorry to reply in 2 posts, but I missed something.
Bloomberg Tech support is eh. Eh because they don't realize what you need right away and have to go through their "levels" of support. But on the other hand, because you're paying them a very large sum of money every month to use their services, I get a call within 5 minutes of submitting a problem, and my "levels" move up very quickly and I don't have to wait on line, they call me when they're ready. Overall, if you pay enough money for something, they'll call you instead.
I managed to keep a tech support person on-line from 4PM to 2AM, making her miss her wedding aniversary, just because I was friendly all the time (naturally, she wasn't one of the minimum-wage workers, but a tech support manager).
Naturally she wasn't concerned about her marriage and was really hoping for you to stop being nice and ask her out already.
Seriously...a wedding anniversary! Sorry that doesn't happen, unless of course you're an i-banker and even then it probably won't happen.
you should try #gentoo on freenode.net or forums.gentoo.org. Not because it's Gentoo, but because it's a distribution that all source compile and all the users are working on the same goals. I've found this to be a resource that ALL Linux users can use, and everyone there is SUPER nice:) No one there is too new to linux and no one there is too veteren, everyone has something nice to contribute regardless of how long you've been using linux.
There are too many. At home I don't have much use for USB, but when I installed Linux on my brother's computer who uses a wireless USB mouse...that was fun. I personally use a USB removable hard-drive (read: digital camera) and had no problems with it, since the drivers for that worked pretty much without any trouble, once I was able to figure out which device to mount, but getting the input devices such as keyboard and mouse to work are a bit more annoying because you need to have them all working without X and before the OS even has control.
Deciding between the 2 different type of modules to install OHCI and the other one and then trying to figure out all the various HDI and other configuration settings to flip on was a royal pain in the ass. Luckily I was installing Gentoo and had worked with USB before so I was able to get it working using the old make-shift guide in a couple of tries, but this thing should be easier to do.
OK. Granted if I used Mandrake or something it would have worked and using Gentoo basically means that I should know what I'm doing, but the guides out there suck, or just aren't up-to-date, or aren't synced up and give conflicting advice. There needs to be some sort of good unification, and more often than not, I've realized that the Gentoo docs apply to everyone and are generally more up to date because, well, the users are like that.
You are not allowed to say "I am going to kill the president." Why? Because it will get you arrested. According to the law that is a threat.

Also, giving out information on how to construct illegal devices will flag you. Weather you like it or not.
So, in short, all you over zealous/.'ers think that this case should be thrown out of court and him set free. Gimme a break. You do something that is going to get you arrested, then don't be surprized when it happens. There are many ways to go about doing things. Often the same thing can be accomplished using their own tools (politics) instead of something rash.

Anyway, I suppose I used Alaska because it is an easy example for various things, but I meant it as a hypothetical and general example. I do know of the specific topic you discuss, but as I am not that involved with it, don't know the details.
But, what I meant is that often what happens is that companies lobby in order to destroy natural resources so they may use the land for their own benefit. Sometimes this can help the natives because they will also profit because they will be the major workforce in the area, but when it comes down to it, these companies have no concern of the land and they are governed by the money they make. That's the end bottom line.
Yes, when it comes down to it, I am racist (for the lack of a better word) against most coroporations, and especially those that are interested in destroying natural resources, or are purly interested in making money without regard to others (such things as Oil and SUV's come to mind).
I'm not sure what it means by the "higest rating possible," but I do know that Level 2 security clearance is what you need in order to take orders and be a real DoD contracter. This is the level that I believe Raytheon's ICCC division (the ones that program the missiles) and other companies such as Boeing work on. The divisons themselves have to be certified in order to work on projects, and since about last year the gov't has started to push their contracters to do this, it makes sense that this finally happened.
This doesn't really open the way for other companies to use Linux, I don't think, but perhaps this will get other compeanies to do this as well. More competition can't hurt, right?
well, after reading for quite a while, I decided to comment on the early tone I noticed. Cliche of DC, and my comment is cliche with his comments about/.'ers...
Many of the posts here throw out statements like "Washington is bought"; and it reminds me how little slashdot readers understand about the U.S. government.
OK, well, you said this, then explained it in a question or two later. Yes, you speak the truth, but I'll fill your generalization of/.'ers as saying that you speak like someone from DC. And you do. Though you took the time to answer these great questions, but often you didn't quite answer the question (IMO).
Anyway, with this statement I would say, who funds the 2 major parties? Rather, what percentage of the funds of either party come from individuals and corporations? I have a rough estimate, and I know you do as well. Now that we have that out of the way, of the individuals, how much of those donations are made from individuals who's income is greater than 100,000 USD? OK, that should be a good large number. Now we are left with a small percentage, which is what represents the general population. No, Washington DC is not bought, but it is nudged...a lot.
On to other points:
When a Congressman is lobbied either by corporation or his local Lion's Club, he is thinking in terms of how it benefits his constituents and his/her personal beliefs.
Well yes. But when most of the money for your campaign comes from corporations that are interested in logging and drilling for oil in Alaska, they become yoru largest number of constituents. They gave you that money because they think that you can help them out. You are a representative of Alaska and these are your constituents. Would you please tell me how cutting down several thousand acres of forest and drilling for oil will help the general population? Ah yes, it will greatly increase the income of the area and provide jobs. And 50 years down the line everyone will hate those companies because they destroyed the natural resources, and now the children have to suffer all the pollution and crud that has been left in it's place.
Though your intentions are good and you've answered some questions, I still don't have a better opinion of my representative (I'm in NY) nor do I think that most of the polititions can put 100% of their thoughts into the people they represent. This is simply because they got elected because of the funds they received from the corporations that are trying to become human-like. Until they do away with this money rubbish, the opinion of DC will not change by many.

I believe this only effects the NT based computers, since it is a RPC hack and 98 and below aren't NT based computers, thus don't run an RPC server!
