  1. Re:the blight is really bloat on Win95 Lifecycle Draws to a Close · · Score: 1

Who cares if it uses a couple of Gigs? HArd drives are way cheaper per MB now than 6 years ago and its not bloat. Even if it only supports a feature that one employee uses once, it costs nothing while sitting idle on the HD yet saves money when she uses it. And once you reach 100 or so users, you can bet that every feature is being used all the time, just not by everybody.

Adding reliability is not bloat. New features are not bloat. Bloat is when the software does more than you will ever need. Perhaps it's worth keeping in mind that there are lots of users who's needs are very different from yours.

Our cool "cat" needs to think through the whole issue of what OSS is about. The point of OSS is that its a gift. Usually you don't even know who you are giving it to. So why worry if some poor sap is trying to cover the cost of burning CSs by re-issuing your code. Provided you have the GPL, you have lost nothing. And really, how much money will the CD burner make, if any?

If you want nice feedback, stop wasting time coding and give people $10 bills. They always say thanks and never complain about the artwork.

  3. Re:not the only performance hit on InfoWorld says WinXP much slower than Win2K · · Score: 1

Its unrealistic to expect most people to have even a basic feeling for how their system works. A neighbour asked me to fix her system saying the menus on the top were gone. She mentioned never using Microsoft though having been on a 5 hour training course last week. I know sod all about Apple but said I'd have a go. It turns out she has win98 and has right-clicked removing her toolbar in Outlook Express. While she makes tea, I right click and out it back. Amazed at my genius, she shows me the Microsoft stuff she never uses...its MS Word. Then she turned off the PC, using the power switch because Win98 takes so long to shut down otherwise.

I went home laughing but really, on a normal road, I bet 19 out of 20 PC users are just like that lady. The computer is simply a mysterious box. Of course, that's why those in the industry get paid too much ;-)

  4. Great game based on both Civ 2 and Alpha Centauri on Civilization III Is Out, And It Rocks · · Score: 2, Interesting

The problem with Civ3 is that all the ideas needed were tried out in Alpha Centauri. So if you like Alpha Centauri, you'll love Civ3 because human history is way more interesting than fantasy future techs. The blue/green Earth is also easier on the eye than the gloomy reds and blacks of Alpha Centauri. Overall, my feeling is that this is a superb game built using the experiences of previous games and that you only take from your own enjoyment if you start fussing about this tech was dome here before or that diplomacy was done that way before. Just play enjoy and try to remember to sleep.

  5. Is it economically viable? on AT&T Wireless Drops Fixed Wireless · · Score: 3, Informative

I worked for a pure fixed wireless business on www.tele2.co.uk as a salesman and marketing manager. The problem is that there is so much fibre buried and phone lines already installed, that a new service struggles to cover even its operating costs. In most urban areas, the cheapest way to move data is to use existing infrastructure. Once you leave the city centre, trees obstruct fixed wireless so complaints rise every Spring of installations that were done in December-Febuary no longer being viable. This leads to a uninstalls along with a bad reputation. It destroys margin on sales.

Fixed wireless is a superb technology but the existing technologies make it very hard to deploy it econmoically.

Calling this a DOS misunderstands what a denial of serice attack does. A DOS attack blocks you r bandwidth and there's absolutely nothing you can do about that ping flood. If a record company uploads Mambo No 5 from your achine again and again very slowly, it may stop others uploading it at the same time but you can free your connection anytime but shutting down Gnutella, Kazaa or whatever. And since the song wasn't yours to give away in the first place, this hardly seems unreasonable.

  8. Email address harvesting on Looking At The New Linux Trojan · · Score: 1

This is pure and simple email address harvesting. A program that is of unknown origin that serves no known purpose but must be run as root is not a Trojan Horse. Its more like the Greeks launching a full frontal assault on the walls of Troy in the hope that the people of Troy would simply open the gates and let them in.

My guess is that these people are building up a database of email addreses.

It seems they have the IP addresses of the infected machines. So the routing tables of backbone providers could be updated to block those IP addresses. I think that might prompt the owners to patch their machines, disable IIS or whatever.

So what's the problem here...its just like rbl-ing a spam host.

  11. Re:It's a business model problem on Is The Wireless Internet Not Ready For Prime Time? · · Score: 1

I worked as Business Development Manager for www.tele2.co.uk, a wireless ISP in England. The plain truth is that in urban areas, the cable and DSL infrastructure is cheaper because you can do a whole area at once. The frustration of wireless from a marketing point of view is that even on the same street, some houses have line of sight, some don't, you can't tell til they have bought the service which is which, the survey to find out costs over $200 and the each failure takes the margin out of several successful installations.

Add to that the fact that only a small percentage of houses want broadband and you have a very tough proposition. Exciting technology but no foreseeable breakeven point.
