  1. This can be slipped in without the public knowing on Ogg Vorbis - The Free Alternative To MP3 · · Score: 2
The winamp and napster people could very easily get ogg in there with very little effort. Here's how:

In napster, add some code to include .ogg files as part of the music collection (and I guess they'd have to do a little to read the files for bitrate, length etc).

In winamp, add an ogg codec as part of the standard release (I think one already exists as a plugin) and add the file association along with the winamp lightning bold icon. Windows doesn't even show file extensions by default - it'll take some people a while to even know it was there.

mp3 carries no brand loyalty - this could be very easy indeed.

Gore may have had the "inventing the internet" fiasco, but he is still easily the better choice for anyone that cares about tech issues. His poorly worded comment was actually about his support in congress for facilitating faster development of a nationwide network (which was absolutely true. He was the guy who coined "info superhighway", and although lame, his intentions are good).

Personally I'm voting for a third party - either Nader or Browne - because that is really the best thing I can do with my vote. They won't win, but if more people vote for third parties, they will get more respect, and who knows? We just might have a system with several legitimate parties, which would be a Good Thing.

But since the race is between Gore and Dubya, Gore had better win. It is imperative that Dubya loses this election.

I got the test back recently (usually you don't but I sorta ran into an administrator that had it) and I had gotten every single question right, which is very unusual with AP tests, their being very hard. I know I didn't do that well on any of my other AP tests.

So that year, the AP CompSci test was just ridiculously easy. My entire class got 5's on it (the highest possible score) and a lot of them hadn't used a computer before in their life and couldn't do a lot of the assignments.

For good assignment choices, I would look at some of those programming contests that are all over the web, and definately give the kids the option of coming up with their own project if they have a good idea for one. I asked my teacher if I could skip the regular assignments because I already knew C++ and work on a program that would play Connect 4 against a human instead, and I had a great time of it and came up with a cool program.

Email advertising should have the correct email address of the sender in either the To: or Reply-to: header, or both. And it should start the subject line with the word "Advertisement". This would make it easy for anyone who wishes to filter it out, and anyone else to respond. It should also have a WORKING mechanism for you to easily take yourself off the list.

Advertising itself should not be outlawed, but violators of the above should be prosecuted. Ban it and they'll still do it. Make those rules and people that follow the law will probably have an easier time than those who don't, making it impractical to NOT follow those rules.

Here's what I never understood: CD's aren't that good! In some ways, LP phonographs have better sound (they are analog). I would like to see a new audio format (say, on DVD discs) with the following:

    -96khz sampling rate
    -24 (or 32?) bit audio
    -5.1 channel surround sound
-and would it hurt to include the Artist, Album and Track names in the table of contents, so they can be shown on computers/stereos playing the disc?

That, I think, would push any differences between the digitized sound and the original analog sound out of the range of human discrimination.

And, as a bonus - if we devote more data to sound quality, there is less total available recording time for an artist making an album. I would like to see a limit of say, 45 minutes. I think that would cut down on the number of crap fluff songs that artists put in their album nowadays because they feel like they need to fill the 74 minutes or just like to hear their voice.

But that's precisely what's so beautiful about it - you have only the words themselves to interpret what the poster really means. It such an encounter was face-to-face, this form of humor would be impossible. Either you use a sarcastic tone of voice, making it obvious to all, or you use a sincere tone, which screws it all up unless it is done perfectly. I love extracting meaning from this kind of stuff based on what is left unsaid.

I guess my original plan was to post something likely to attract posts arguing with it, and then to those posts I would respond with something so outrageous that they would know I wasn't serious. When people still didn't grasp it, I upped it even more. After reading the resulting replies, I got frustrated as all heck ;-)

Oh well, if some people laughed, it served its purpose. It sucks that all I get to see is the negative reactions.

I read this a while ago.

The academy isn't trying to be stingy here. They're trying to make their rule clear right now, in hope that confusion won't arise later as net films will presumably gain an audience.

The academy has nothing against the internet - their rule includes ANYTHING other than theatres - national or cable tv, videocassette/laserdisc/dvd. Basically, they feel that there is something to be lost in the experience of watching a film if you don't see it in a big theatre. I can see where they're coming from - they care about their art form. Conceited? Perhaps, but it is their awards, and a film doesn't HAVE to try and win anything if it doesn't want to. I doubt a rule like that would have kept the south park movie off the net if they thought they had a good reason.
