oh yeah. I was thinking of that episode, but you're right, she was considering it. That was a great line which followed, btw: "I'm a level _five_ vegan - I don't eat anything that casts a shadow"

  3. Re:Um, it's too late for the Simpsons... on CueCat Seeks Simpsons Endorsement · · Score: 5

FYI, Groenig is the guy who gave us the first couple seasons of "don't have a cow, man" and heads that throb when choked.

The genius behind the simpsons is George Meyer, a writer who was considered so good they kept him in the editing room practically full time so that he very rarely got actual writing credit for a show. Most of the good, unexpected gags are his.

Meyer and some of the other good comedy writers that made it good are no longer there.

  5. Re:Unattended MP3 to Vorbis Conversion? on Ogg Vorbis Changes (Just About) Everything · · Score: 2

What needs to happen if this is to be absorbed into the mainstream is that napster, winamp and similiar programs need to add support for ogg files in their next version.

Then, Joe User searches for some song and downloads it. It ends up in "My Music" and he never even sees the ".ogg" extension because windows hides it by default. It's got a little lightning icon because it's been associated with winamp and he can play it just like any other file.

Eventually, people trading songs would make the association, "oh, these new ogg things work just like mp3s but (hopefully) are smaller)". At that point, if Fraunhoffer tried anything funny, people would laugh at them and use ogg.

  6. Multichannel? on Ogg Vorbis Changes (Just About) Everything · · Score: 4

Does anybody know about support for multichannel (specifically 5.1) audio streams? I've got a surround setup and some surround recordings on DVDs, and it would be just swell if I could encode those...

  7. Re:Ogg Vorbis, a user's report on Ogg Vorbis Changes (Just About) Everything · · Score: 2

As file size is a direct function of bitrate, there should be no surprises at the size of the encoded file. Perhaps you might notice that you can use lower bitrates before you start noticing a drop in quality.

interesting how you worked politics into that.

In my area, unfortunately, which is literally under 500 feet from the TCI headquarters, there is no high speed option of any kind. Not cable modem, not DSL. You can of course get a satellite option but you're still restricted to dial-up for sending data.

But yeah, I agree about game development. You can make every effort to use network traffic efficiently, but if supporting modem speeds means you have to cut corners on the quality of the game, there's a good reason to just go the high-bandwidth route.

  16. Re:Interesting Editorial on Human Genome Confirms Evolution · · Score: 2

So would I. I'm interested in hearing just what they found which provides new insights on our evolution. Apparently, the junk DNA provides a detailed record of how the genome has changed over time, and even has all kinds of organisms living in it at the chromosome level. (cool!)

However, this article fills a niche - the wingnuts who actually follow 'scientific creationism' respond to stuff like this. Of course, most won't be moved and may simply wait for the order from their leadership on how to respond to what is sure to be some devastating new findings for their 'theory'.

But for some of them, it is exactly this sort of sweeping statement which they've been waiting for. It sums it up rather nicely and puts a stamp on the death of this issue (well, the genome puts a stamp on it more than this one prof does). When more data from the Genome project pours in, I optimistically believe that efforts to teach creation in public schools will fail miserably with little or no fanfare.
