I don't want to have to put a game layer on top of my work to feel like I'm doing something important, and for good reasons.
Or maybe I'm just too cynical.
Dystopian view: in the future, good reasons or not, there may be a medication for you. It only requires the majority of people to want it and you'll be "outside of the acceptable norm, need treatment".
I believe that there is something fundamentally different between gaming and real life. You cannot respawn in real life. There are significant and measurable consequences for screwing up.
For some, this is irrelevant (think: most CEO-s, most of the top level financials - Goldman-Sachs - want some other examples or can you already find them on your own?)
Adapting a business model to a game is asking staff to adopt an 'all care, no responsibility' attitude.
Guess what? The guys that can afford to believe in re-spawning are the ones that are most likely to decide the "rules of the game".
I would say that what we're really doing is further perverting the innate mechanisms by which we best learn and it's not through mechanical determination it's through a more interactive and engaging process that works with-- [...] against our nature.
FTFY. RTFA if you don't believe me. Below some relevant quotes:
But gamification advocates do not preach the beauty and power of play. Perhaps without knowing it, they're selling a pernicious worldview that doesn't give weight to literal truth. Instead, they are trafficking in fantasies that ignore the realities of day-to-day life. This isn't fun and games—it's a tactic most commonly employed by repressive, authoritarian regimes.
At a Google Tech Talk last year, Zichermann gushed about the low-cost opportunities this creates for business. He was particularly excited by Zynga's collaboration with 7-Eleven, a deal in which people could buy FarmVille credits along with a Slurpee. FarmVille credits didn't get you the Slurpee, Zichermann explained excitedly. Rather, customers paid real dollars for the virtual currency. "It's all money in and no money out!" he cried.
With the exception of a few fields, a non credentialed individual can have just as much credibility and experience and knowledge as someone with an institutional education.

All that shit costs more money than even an overpriced movie once per week. Big-budget movies are cheap.
Yeah... I forgot... mortgage and all that... sorry, man, I'll let you with your pain, can't help.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with catching a movie now and then. Cinema is not a lesser form of entertainment than your suggested alternatives, merely different.
Well, other than burning man - but I'd rather sit through Battlefield earth, in 3D, for a solid weekend than attend that.
I'm cool with that, buddy; as I said... your pick. Speaking for myself, I trade anytime the headache caused by tricking your senses with a 3D movie/game for the hangover after a good wine and a all-night jam-session.
What retarded kind of argument is "more of your money will reach the artists" supposed to be? I watch movies, go to concerts, etc. because I want to be entertained, not as an act of charity.
Sure... your choice... JarJar and Lady Gaga may be good enough for your money, then.
Tell ya... use torrents... same entertainment, cost of the download is pretty low.
This ^^^ speaking about context. May I ignore your proposed context?
Because here's my point of view. And, yes, my 3D does give me sometimes headaches... for example, almost every time I'm "blindly" immersing myself in the 3D touch of too many bottles of beer on their way to my mouth (may happen to you too, eyepatch or not).
My everyday reality is still 3D (and not only visually) and hell of a lot more immersive than any movie/game. Yours?
You... you do realise that reality is a world away from 3D movies, right?
Glad to see that your real world is as real and 3D as mine. Now, my advice: fuck "3d movie" as entertainment and use the real 3D world more often. You know? A good theatrical play with real actors, dance shows, rock concerts, food-wine-and-jazz festivals, Burning-Man etc... your pick... might, just might, be more satisfying for you and, besides, more of your money will reach the artists.
but '3D' as in the movie technology is not immersive at all
Is '3D as in movie" your world, dragon?
You like it, you're welcome to it - I'm staying away.
And asking for my point? Here's my point: you don't like the "movie 3D" experience, welcome to the real world - not only "immersive" but also highly interactive (to the point that someone may even shit on you... but no risk, no gain).
This means we will probably be sold special earphones in the future to stimulate the ear into movement to counteract the eyes. Yet more accessories and expense to the technology.
Earphones? Still tricking the senses? Noo... nothing below a "3D Immersion couch" to compensate for the lack of surround movement... to be supplemented by anti-inertial gizmos to keep one's beer steady (and still carbonated) and the salty chips/popcorn in the bucket, while the "3D couch" rocks. See why.
Considering that Sony will sue people who even *talk* about putting their IP on the web, you think they're just going to sit back and watch while you allow everyone and his brother to put all their ripped Sony CD's on a web accessible service?
At least, the IP they have in their rootkit is safe:by now, all decent AV solutions detect and remove it (maybe there is an idea around?)
Q: Are the Days of Individual Security Over? A: most definitely yes: the individuals have all been secured! Now it is time to move forward to social security...
Errr... what? Ah,now I see why this is coming from:

Grinding (case lists) and ganking (backstabbing managers) shit me to tears. I don't play WoW any more - should I treat work the same way?
False dichotomy... For example, you can switch to play "Angry birds" (if falling pigs is more to your taste).
For people NOT obsessed with gaming?
Yes, there is a trick: simply do whatever it takes to reach the "Game over" the fastest possible. After a while, everybody will let you be.
Sometimes "bad" is a necessary evil to get closer to the truth.
One wonders: in this context, is "getting to the truth" of any consequence?
He understood, does not mean he agrees. One can understand the logic of the argument and not agree with the logic.
... going further (and OT as well), even agreeing with the logic doesn't imply acceptance (like in: "make a Sophie's choice")
Well, yeah, a scandalous book might sell more, but does Paul Allen really need the money?
You see... if it wouldn't be so scandalous, I bet that Paul Allen would had it published under a CC license.
But... lawyers are expensive, better be safe than sorry.

How is Amazon going to prevent someone from sharing out their username and password?
If you pay for 100 GB of space, Amazon is going to have your credit card sitting in that account ready to rip. That's one clear disincentive.
Throw-away CC-s?
Decades in the making, and all he can complete is Volume 4A part 1. How long for part 2? Will we ever see 4B?
All I can say: we'll see it after DNF is released... marketing reasons: too many miracles in the same time come with risk of trivializing them.

No one would deny that 3D is more immersive
Oh, really?
My everyday reality is still 3D (and not only visually) and hell of a lot more immersive than any movie/game. Yours?
And mostly, I am not going to buy my teenagers $120 glasses just so they can watch more TV.
But... but... this is bad for the movies and game industries, won't you think of them?
So, they started with small fry... Long way to go, then.
