  1. Reality Check on Is the $400 Billion F-35's 'Brain' Broken? (cnn.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

Estimated to cost approximately $16.7 billion over the aircraft's 56-year lifespan, the logistics software system is considered one of the three major components that make up the F-35, along with the airframe and engine.

Unlike the airframe and engine, however, the software is not built into the plane itself. Instead, it runs on ground computers to support operations, mission planning, maintenance and sustainability.

    So...
    1. Unlike when you take your car to the shop, they won't be able to have the plane tell them what's wrong.
    2. If CSC updates the servers and breaks it (like the usually do to ours), there are no backups.

The "Brain" is actually the pilot and the software that displays threats, targets and kills them is apparently working correctly.

"Heavies" have a very limited view of anything below the nose. if it hit above the centerline of the nose, the drone would likely have slipped up into the windshield, removing all doubt that there was a hit and what it was.

If it hit below, then the pilots would not have been able to see hit, only hear and maybe feel it.

I just don't buy the assertion that pilots, focusing on landing the plane, busy with instruments, decent rates, staying on the ILS, check lists, are able to spot a less than a meter across "drone" from their little windows as they fly by it at 120 MPH (at the slowest speed).

And instead of one of the millions of birds flying around, it must have been one of the hundreds of "drones" flying around.

    Yes.

The Raptor's two Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 engines pump out 35,000 pounds of thrust each (compare that to the 25,000-29,000 pounds of thrust for each engine on an F-15). Combined with the sleek aerodynamic design, the engines allow the Raptor to cruise at supersonic speeds with less fuel consumption than any other aircraft.

So the technology is out there.

Actually, being able to get from point A to point B faster than a day's worth of travel will probably save countless billions in time and money for everyone from executives to a family going to Disney World, or Europe.

To get from the middle of the country to either coast takes about 4 hours in the air. Add in the precursor activities and post arrival activities and it's an entire day wasted.

Consider a Family of four going to Disney on either coast. A one hour flight vs. 4 (at best, if you get a straight through) will save you four meals, two hotel rooms for a night, and take up one less day of your vacation time.

With the Supercruise capabilities we see on F-22's it may even mean lower fuel consumption per hour.
