Whilst I'm no programmer, I do a fair amount of web design and html coding. And when I am in work mode, I need my specific music to get in the mood. If you're not in the mood and comfortable with the sounds around you, your work will not be up to scratch.
And for anyone or any boss who suggests that a programmer/coder has to work without music/headphones is an idiot and it clearly demonstrates their lack of integrity in this field.
