  1. Are you hiring? on Organization Structure Recommendations for Technical Depts? · · Score: 1

"Too often these days you'll see cluelees recruiters and companies who think that, despite your 10 years in software development, you are unqualified becase you don't posess fad skill X. They don't think for a second that the guy who DOES know X probably knows ONLY X, so in 5 months when..."

I cut, pasted and sent that to my boss. Why is it that people dont understand this. Just because they have a Certificate from a software vendor doesnt mean they can fix anything. If you understand how everything works from the ground up, to a reasonable detail, you should be able to solve anything.

It took you one sentence to say what Ive been trying to say for years.

What would they block on a business account?

Wouldn't it make more sense for them to require companies/sites to ask permission before writing or accessing a cookie? I mean, anything can be used the wrong way, and abused.

It may be in the best interest of the Internet though, because many sites require cookies. Maybe that would force said sites to have a cookieless solution, or miss out on all the possible readership. Itll be interesting to see what happens in the future.

Yeah, gotta look out for those water bills!

Ok, ok, of course I meant my electricity bill.

What about some sort of containment device that attaches directly to the outside of the case, allowing either cold air in or hot air out? Hell maybe both. Its a general idea now, but Im talking about a tube to channel air from a fan in the back of the case, to the cpu, and then from the cpu to the back of the case, creating a wind tunnel of sorts.

  5. The world may never know... on General Fan Performance Guide · · Score: 1

This argument is still going on. I wonder why companies resort to this type of tom-foolery. It makes me wonder about the authenticity of all the fan performance guides and papers.

There has to be something more effective that we are overlooking in the processor cooling arena. Water-cooling is neat, but I try to keep my case dry, and the thought of adding a water pump running all the time to my water bill makes me cringe.
I thought peltiers were cool for a while but now I wonder about them as well, with many people saying that they aren't as effective as reported.

I guess the argument goes back to the old "ugly beige box" syndrome, and how its effected the PC industry. I would imagine that there is someone out there that could design a much more effective cooling system if they would drop all of the pre-thought notions that it has to be a box.

Am I overlooking a previous slashdot story?

This has got to be the most outrageous idea since someone thought it would be cool to have changeable covers on their laptops. They are now missing the entire idea that they relied upon for forming the company. It is no longer easy. Now I can only play your files with your player and next, after AOL buys Napster, I can only play them on your AOL machine. Where are we headed. I want my MP3. Its easy, widespread, and is high quality. Its not for audiophiles, but you know.

Well, Win2K and occasionally various flavors of Linux. Id argue about "use" though. I forced myself through a 28.8 kbps download and install of Slackware a few years back, and have had a certain amount of respect for it since. While I still have not to this day built a linux box and used it for more than a month straight, I find myself keeping up with the latest, and occasionally installing the latest distributions just for grins. 2.4.6 is a good thing.

FreeBSD development is obviously a big part of your life. I have noticed that peoples reasons for using a free OS are often not simply because its better, but because of some view or stance on freedom that they have.

I am a Windows guy, only because my job says so.

What I want to know is, how would you go about convincing me, a Win2k user, to consider using a *BSD. I am interested in learning a new OS... always. But, what makes it stand out from Linux/Win2k/MacOS?
