The Beatles were bigger than Jesus. The internet allows for new indie bands to make a name for themselves without having to shell out mad cash. These bands can also retain the image that THEY feel they want to portray rather then what a producer dictates. Selling direct is new in the sense that the internet is breaking new ground.
Just look no further then the pirate radio movement for insight as to the need for more open free access to bands that are not regulated by a major label. The same goes for documentaries and films. Technology is now at the point where amateurs can produce a really polished product without having to take another mortgage out on there house(s).
Bands indie movie makers and even game developers (world of goo anyone) would rather give the product away for free in the name of creating recognition for talent. This model is better because it has less start up costs and potential for even higher earnings in the long run. When people realize a game or movie was awesome and got it for free they may be inclined to send a few bucks out of respect. Making people pay up front only to be pissed that the product sucks is a dated and failing model.
I downloaded the Radiohead album, digged it but not as much as I did after realizing it was what I listened to more than anything else in my car (given the choice). After a month of having the album I sent them a few bucks.
Freedom to do what with media as you please.
I think of them as freedom fighters. Without them these media companies would keep infringing on peoples rights. Having legitimately bought cd's upload DRM to a users computer without them knowing is the exact sort of sh!t that makes this evermore important for the majority of consumers.
I personally think unknowingly hacking mass amounts of computers is worse then downloading a safe alternative. You can go to jail quite readily for hacking a computer, stealing a CD not so much.
The RIAA cases are a clear example as to why these media corporations are as evil as any pirate, viking or Persian. At the end of the day we might see more bands (NIN RADIOHEAD) move towards a distribution model that puts them in control. This movement can only help everybody except the sleezy middle men that have been dictating trends and prices for decades.
The fact that people have created there own distribution model and it's working better then the old one shows the futility in the now obsolete model of the past.
I would love to see these media companies walk the plank.....
Ya all the ip's in my house are banned from microsoft.com. Hilarious. Yet they still let me on hotmail and msn simply because they don't want me using Gmail or something else.
*Firefox can't find the server at www.microsoft.com.*
Guess that is why we have proxy's
No dvd player my "tv" is a projector (hooked up to my computer), I use a carputer in my truck. My computer has no drive (core i7 p6t Deluxe). Some of us have found no need for such mediums. Even my xbox (original) has a dead dvd drive and I just upload games to the hard drive via Ethernet(chipped).
Thanks for coming out though....
Up here college and university are two different things. Typically college level courses at a high school level are easier and most do not contribute to admission at a university. Though some classes are both college/university. We encourage my brother to take the path he wants, but taking university level courses simply gives you more degrees of freedom as they will get you accepted to both a college or university. Choice is key when your 17 and don't know what you want to do with your life.
Finger Eleven bra, and Thousand Mile Wish is one of the greatest songs ever made. I grew up watching these guys at the YMCA before they were famous. Never bought a CD (don't even have a player). However I have been to at least 7 concerts. As I always say, if a band is willing to stop by Toronto I will pay 15-120$ to see them otherwise odds they see any cash from me are slim. BTW Check out Great Lake Swimmers, such a great up and coming band.
Actually, up here in Kenada you can pick your stream starting from 9th grade. Either being College level or University courses. In grade 11 you can choose whether you want to persue sciences business or phys ed. Physics Chemistry Biology Accounting Law etc are choices. You can also opt to take apprentice programs if that is your fancy.
Bottom line is the flakes took 6 gym classes and college level followed by auto and anybody wanting to get into university took university courses.
Little brother tried to pull a fast one on my mom a year ago taking mostly college level and I caught him. He just got accepted to Uni and thanked me cause he would otherwise have had to run a victory lap or done epic summer school.
"A Canadian scientist once tried to make it possible for Canadian satellites to be launched without the use of southern rockets.
He had his budget cut on request from the Overlords, so en went to work on his giant canon project with funding from Saddam Hussein. He ended up dead in front of his door with his keys in the lock and the very clean gun next his body."
Or forget the Avro-Aero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_Aero) also found dead at the door with a nice clean American made gun beside it.
South Park - "Mexico has a space program?"
JT: I guess people just have to start wearing those hats with mosquito netting on it.
JH: That's right. Exactly. Maybe that'll be the social reaction. Everyone will dress in -- or they'll start wearing these -- you've seen this technology that allows you to bend light so you can literally have a cloak of invisibility. Maybe those will sell well.

This is certainly going to have an adverse affect on exam scores around the world.
