I thought it was to get rid of that awful Prime Directive and the fact that they don't use money in the future. Oh wait, sorry, its been done already: That's Dick Cheney's America.
This is just my opinion, but the US created DARPANet for military purposes and although the internet spawned from the military creation - the US has a right to continue to manage and maintain its creation for its purposes.
After all, you don't often see the US petition France to manage souffle recipes international nor British rock singer Ozzie Osbourne (they can keep him!)
Being a denizen of the area, I heard on the local radio talk show both sides of the argument. The leader of the protesters was only concerned about one specific game being played in the center that taught killing people is "OK" Of course, this is just like most war games do at home but I guess you have to take a stand somewhere. The protesters were a wide range of 30+ individual groups where many were more radical than others. We shouldn't lump sum them into one mindset. The actual protest leaders were fairly moderate and very reasonable.
