I agree, that's why I'm posting. I'm hoping either OSM or one of the others can point to some hard facts, OR one of the slash staff comes on to either confirm or deny all this.

Until then it's just my sneaking suspicion that something's not right in the troll world.

But you admit to not being the original one, and no one has ever stepped forward to claim responsibility for those. That, for starters, is very unlike a troll. Just like hackers, they thrive on notoriety.

I still think something decidedly strange is going on...

This was posted in the previous story, also, but the only replys were stupid one. Does anyone have more facts about this case? Is this for real? What the hell is going on?

I posted this before, but I'm going to repost it here because I think it contains some valid points that we need to think about:

    - - - - - - - - - -

I know many of you are thinking, as I did, this is just another elaborate troll, but I did a little research and it turns out there is definitely strange activity going on in the troll camps (look back about 1-2 weeks in that sid to see what I mean).

I know quite a bit about how trolls typically operate, and I can tell you straight off that this is not typical behavior. I'm not so sure I buy this Andover lawsuit thing, but something is happening here. Before you all go off half cocked writing letters to the staff OR going nuts with moderating everything as "Troll" I think we need to find out what's really going on.

Consider that all of this has happened in the last 2 weeks:

    • Penis Bird Man
    • A hostile, anti-troll sid
    • Substantial increase in the number of spam kiddies on slashdot
    • The troll's main home on /. abandoned by all the regulars
    • A new sid was created, and is dominated by the spam kiddies
    • Prior to abandoning the original k22320inchfan there was much talk of a stalker, similar to what happened on TrollTalk. No, this is not bullshit. Ask around if you weren't here then.
    • The Steve Woston trolls dried up suddenly
    • That bit about Natalie's birthday is also 100% true. All the troll posts got slapped to -1, and therefore weren't archived, but it did happen. For about 4 hours nobody could post to that story
Now, whatever the case really is here, we definitely need to calmly begin understanding what is actually going on.

Yes, do it BEFORE it expires! I transferred to registrars.com after the last NSI bruhaha. It was painless and took less than a week, but they do NOT have the best legal protections for domain holders. They also are fairly pricey (see below).

In my researched it looked like all the good registrars either won't accept transfers or make the process overly cumbersome. So as a trade-off I got away from NSI but my new contract still makes me a little nervous.

As for the prices, well, unless you're doing hundreds of registrations a month then you really can't complain about $10/year difference in cost. I mean, if you're that hard up for cash then you should be pawning the computer, not registering domain names.

If you ARE registering in bulk then you must be re-selling, so just pass along the cost to the buyers. Stop bitching about prices ya tight-asses. There's much bigger issues at stake here than a measely $10 a year.

What saddens me the most is that it has been a slow, 15+ year decline. Pinball got cancer in the mid 80's, and the chemo hasn't been working.

    From the article:
Rather than staying old school, the companies tried to compete with video games. "They gave pinball lots of glitz and gizmos," Levine said. "But they had games with very little soul."

I would somewhat agree with this, but the last Star Wars pinball game had a pretty fun video mode. Plus, not all innovations were bad. Black Knight's Magna-Save was great. Pinbot had a cool lock. The LCD animation in The Adams Family was fairly entertaining. Really it was the few terrible ideas that stick in your mind (like PacMan pinball. Yech!) when you could tell that the game makers were desperately throwing in the kitchen sink.

Anyway, I'm just rambling in my despondant sense of slow loss. If anyone knows a good location of games near Austin let me know. I've got lots of quarters, and who needs to do laundry anyway?

In this case I'm refering to disasters in general, not data cabling ones in particular. But, since you brought it up... ;)

    • First, your plan only works for a single story house (or the 2nd floor of a 2 story)
    • How are you getting the cable from the attic into the wall (there's a top plate there, y'know)
    • Why are you drilling into gypsum board? It's gonna make a huge mess, and really is overkill. Try a utility knife instead.
    • How are you going to get the CAT5 through the wall? Do you own a fish? Do you know what I mean by "fish"?
    • You're screwing an RJ45 plate directly to the gypsum? That should last about a week. How about a box instead?
    • Where are you putting the box? Did you find a stud?
    • Do you know how to patch drywall? Putting in that box will make a bigger hole than a plate will cover.
    • Did you run the cable down the correct side of the stud? If not, back into the attic and try again.
    • I hope you live well North of the equator, because most attics get really hot and I wouldn't put networking hardware in one.
    • Don't forget a drop cloth when you paint. Yes, you'll have to paint that drywall patch you did.

    Just some thoughts ;)
