Try using the Spam Calculator on Brightmail's website. It uses several different variables in calulating the cost to all Internet users, and it assumes an annual cost of $255 million. You also have the option of entering your own values for the variables and calculating the annual cost based on those values.
It's not that we're doing anything wrong--we already have consumer advocacy groups and the ACLU to stand up for us. They just don't have nearly as much influence as a corporation or foreign government would. There isn't much that an individual can do to change things, other than to write to their local congressman. Even then, it would take a huge campaign to make representatives actually take notice and do something about it.
I'm also what's known as a "goth" at school. I can't understand why people feel the need to pick on us just because we happen to be interested in different things than they are. Just because I dress in all black, wear white makeup and listen to Marilyn Manson doesn't mean I'm a lesser person than some jock on the football team. And people feel the need to torment me just because I believe in a religion that they are unfamiliar with and know how to cast spells.
That depends on what you think it's worth. There are approximately 1500 games he has listed. Games used to cost anywhere from $50 to $70, but let's say he spent an average of $40 per game, maybe he bought some of them used. That's still $60K, and he probably spent at least $2000 on all the systems. I'm not saying that he ought to make a profit off auctioning them on eBay, but when you compare $17K (what it's at now) to over $60K, that does sound like a good deal.
I was a loyal Netscape user until about a month ago, when I switched to IE because I thought it was a superior product. I d/led Netscape 6 last night and found it to be much better than 4.7, in my opinion even better than IE 5.5. You should at least give it a try, everything loads much faster and it has a better looking interface, too.
This is reason for concern for anyone who owns a DVD player that is "region-free," however I haven't heard of such a player before. I own an Apex, and while you are able to bypass region encoding, it is supposed to be region 1 and is set to region 1 by default. Unless there are DVD players out on the market that were specifically designed to bypass whatever standards were set for region encoding, I don't see how this would actually affect anyone.
That's interesting, I've found that acid is the most effective in increasing productivity. I've tried E and pot, but what I really need to help get me through the day is the hallucinations.
It's surprising to see this topic on slashdot. I was raised as a Christian but I knew it wasn't right for me, so I remained an agnostic for a few years but I knew that there was something out there..I can't really explain it but I was somehow led to Taoism, and to Hinduism from there. I don't really belong to a specific religion now but my beliefs are derived primarily from Eastern religions. By the way, some good books to read on the subject are Tao Te Ching and Chuang Tzu (Taoist texts), I Ching, and Be Here Now (general spirituality), which I highly recommend.
I read an article on Wired a few months ago about someone who discovered a way to power cars using the heat in the air. Since the temperature can never reach absolute zero, this could theoretically provide an infinite source of power. I'm too lazy to find the link though, and it may very well be total bullshit.
PLEASE DO NOT VOTE FOR FEINSTEIN!!! Here is an entire website devoted to why you should not vote for her. She's anti-civil rights, anti-Internet, anti-just about everything. I'm not a republican but I'm definitely voting for Tom Campbell, who doesn't support the war on drugs and is pro-choice. Here is Tom Campbell's voting record, and the one on his web site.
I've read news articles that say that people don't really have any idea on what her values are, they just feel that they should vote for her anyway, maybe because she's the incumbent. It will be difficult for Tom Campbell to win the election, since he's very low in the polls right now and hasn't been running a very good campaign.
Just because the bill has been revised doesn't mean that we are no longer in danger of the threats it poses to our rights. Because the version passed by the House differs from the one which passed the Senate, Congress must again decide which version to pass. And even if the House's version passes, that probably won't be enough to stop Senator Feinstein, who will likely beat her opponent, Tom Campbell, in the next elections.
Congress will supposedly convene Tuesday, and when that happens you can read about it on their web site. In the meantime, you can read more coverage on this bill here.
First, the UK said it would survey email, then Janet Reno ruled that Carnivore would be allowed to be used, and now this. It seems as each day passes it is getting more and more important to encrypt your emails.
I wouldn't believe a word of this report. Hubble has been known to be very unreliable, offering poor and innaccurate images. It was more likely to have been a bug crawling across the lens.
First, in CmdrTaco's own words, the article has "Some good points. Some not-so-good points." It doesn't say "look at this FUD nonsense from Microsoft."
I never claimed that he said "look at this FUD nonsense from Microsoft." I said he dismissed it as FUD. Look at what he just said in that quote. "Some not-so-good points." I'd say that supports my statement, wouldn't you?
No, I'm saying it because you suggested that those types of reports never appear on Slashdot, when the very same report you used as an example was indeed posted.
Or maybe it's because slashdot is composed of a bunch of sheep who can't think for themselves, the majority of which blindly supports Linux and hates Microsoft.
IIRC, the admin who posted that article dismissed it as FUD from Microsoft. I don't see anything similar in this case.
In addition, your suggestion doesn't even make sense. If I thought that what I had to say was nonsense, then why would I bother posting it all? And I think it's highly impractical to sort through each slashdot article before posting to an article.
I also find it funny that you're asking moderators to moderate your post as a troll.
moderators: the parent post is flamebait. Moderate accordingly.
If Microsoft's business partly depended on the source code you sent them, then it would be justified. Napster relies on people trading copyrighted music (some of which is the Offspring's.) But you're a troll so you probably already knew that.
This looks like it would be useful for businesses, but I don't see what purpose it could serve for personal use. Doesn't DSL already allow voice and data through the phone line anyway?
The San Fransisco Chronicle has an article, the paper itself is located at www.lngs.infn.it.

Come on, it's so obvious that was a troll. Try being a little more subtle, 80md (at least I think that was you). The "Klinton" part especially gave it away.

I was just kidding, I've never worked high. I might try that thing with the acid sometime though.

Actually it's funny you should mention Microsoft's Linux Myths page. Those reports are posted on Slashdot.
See here.
As far as credibility goes, I guess it's you that's lacking. Linux zealot bashers are worse than the Linux zealots they're bashing.
Perhaps you're saying that because you're a linux zealot?

I think that privatized solutions, especially services offered by Brightmail, Inc., are a much better alternative to government-imposed regulation.
This looks like it would be useful for businesses, but I don't see what purpose it could serve for personal use. Doesn't DSL already allow voice and data through the phone line anyway?
don't forget ralph nader's suggestion, .sucks.
