My grandparents grew up on a farm and they LOCKED THE DOORS after a traveling solicitor decided it would be worthwhile to literally stick his foot in the door to prevent my grandmother from closing it on him.
Leaving a door unlocked is plain dumb no matter where you live. You may know and trust your neighbors, but can you say the same about your neighbors guest or even family visiting?
My wife grew up on a farm, their front door didn't even have a lock. Her Uncle owned the property and had hundreds of milk cows and other animals.
If you're out and the neighbor needs something, they can come borrow it, they'll replace it or pay it back in kind, no big deal.
There is a level of respect there that is lacking in big cities.
In the United States, we have 4.9 murders per 100,000 people per year. Of 783,000 Muslim refugees from Afghanistan and Iran in the past 15 years, three (3) have been implicated in terrorism. Over 15 years, we've stocked 2.77 million Muslim immigrants and their children, including those refugees. If only 100 are implicated in terrorism, then any single full-blooded American is TWENTY TIMES as likely to be a murderer as one of these Americanized Muslims. Even if as many as 2,000 were implicated as terrorists--which even Trump hasn't claimed--that's still a lower rate of murderers among Muslim American immigrants than all other Americans.
You pull something like that. It puts Trump on the defensive.
No, he'll respond with a funny comeback, everyone will laugh, and completely forget all that boring stuff you said.
The science is in, the numbers are not fake, this is not a hoax. This is going to have serious global repercussions and it will never go away. We can't even yet stop contributing to the acceleration of emissions, they CONTINUE to grow year by year despite much-touted international accords. The science community agrees this will not be enough, and we are failing at this course correction necessity.
I agree with you, but what you fail to accept is that the changes required to actually fix the problem are simply not acceptable... at least the average person won't accept them until it gets a LOT worse.
Welcome to the human race, a collection of animals that are irrational and not at all Vulcan...
If my next house is oriented right, my first two calls are to SolarCity and VW.
Oh goodie, another person happy to be deluded that those options are "reasonable" because taxpayers are spending tens of thousands of dollars to make them look like that.
While that might work for you, what you fail to understand is that it won't work for everyone, because the tax credits can't be applied that far, and without them the economics fall apart.
Sigh... No wonder Democrats get into office... So many low information idiots willing to vote for them...
Except unless trump manages to get the Republicans on his side he can't do anything.
Sure he can, he is a deal maker, he loves doing deals... He'll just take a few moderate Republicans and walk across the isle and do a deal with Democrats.
Once the Republican leadership gets the point, they'll get on board.
You're thinking in 2D, Trump works in 3D, that is why he is so effective.
Yes, but this isn't the movies and all that costs money. You also won't be able to install it into every public building in town, there isn't the space or the manpower for that.
It might blow your mind as well to know that guns save FAR more lives than they take, only the media doesn't cover it, but the info is there, if you want to learn it...
Apparently it is something like 30,000 Americans that were shot dead last year, I heard on the radio this morning.
Of course you did, which is why you now have a fucking opinion on the subject that isn't worth anything.
33,000 died via gun last year, 2/3 of the suicide. A lot of the rest were gang on gang violence.
The actual number of innocent people killed with guns is a very, very small number.
There are 320+ million guns in the US. Far more of them prevent crime than cause crime. You'd know that if you actually bothered to learn about the subject rather than get your soundbites from the radio.
The problem is that this sort of automatic/semi-automatic weapons are LEGAL.
I suspect you don't actually know what those two terms mean, what type of weapon was used, or what difference it would have made had there been limits on the type of weapon.
But that's ok, lots of people who know nothing about guns just sure love to talk about them.
While it is possible that we might discover some fancy new thing to stop bullets, the reality is that anything soft and easy to wear isn't effective against rifle rounds.
Even the armor worn by police officers generally won't stop most rifle rounds, or at least not completely, and it is far thicker and less comfortably than what people will really wear.
The EU is going to punish us hard now.
Meh, don't worry about them, you have the USA as your friend...
Now you actually DO want Trump to become US President, because he'll be biased towards the UK over the EU, vs Hillary who will be the reverse...
If you live on a farm your most valuable assets are all outside, so a lock isn't going to protect them at all.
Quite true... the cows were probably worth more than the house... :)
Then there is the barn, and the tractor, and so on...
Of course, you'd have to be pretty bloody stupid to rob a country house...

That is what shotguns are for...
That solicitor was stupid...

I would break Trump in a policy debate and, honestly, sometimes I just want to crush *someone*.
And he would break you in the game of persuasion... which he is quite good at....
You're assuming the average person cares about policy details, facts, and logic... they don't...
You seem to be the deluded one...

When taxpayers stop spending $5.3 trillion a year to subsidize fossil fuels, I'll start to worry about renewable subsidies.
Good, then you can worry now, because we're not spending that money... You've been lied to, or you choose to believe a lie...
If my next house is oriented right, my first two calls are to SolarCity and VW.

You need her as President, to 'break the glass ceiling' as it were. To make the majority of you folk realize that a woman can lead.
By that logic, Sarah Palin would be the perfect President...
But seriously folks, do American buildings really skip the 13th floor?
Some do... I've seen enough that it is a "thing" some places...
Everyone wants to focus on guns...
Terrorists killed 3,000 people using box cutters 15 years ago...
http://www.nydailynews.com/new...
One person killed 87 people using matches and gasoline...
If you want to kill people, you don't need guns to do it. This hyper focus on guns completely misses the point.
Mental health, security in crowded locations, having an environment where families who know someone is unstable can do something about it, etc...
More guns, less guns, and tech, won't do anything to stop this.

If a shooter is going to storm the building, there is little that could be done economically for any building and still have it resemble a school.
Not having full size plate glass doors would be a good start...
It's not about preventing a shooter from gaining access
It sure was pitched that way when the new "upgrades" were rolled out.

And you have to ask how he got into the nightclub with all that weaponry
The first people he shot were the guards...
Yeah, it's simpler to lock the damn gun in a gunsafe. No dumbass "smart" techonlogy needed.
It would be, but a gun completely secured in a safe isn't really useful against criminals.
I have a quick open safe next to my bed with my 1911 in it, but even then it isn't instantly accessible.
The problem is that this sort of automatic/semi-automatic weapons are LEGAL.

It's called gun control.
There is no amount of gun control short of a complete outright ban that would have prevented this.
He was a security guard and had a licence to carry a gun.
Could there be a technological solution to the problem of mass shootings?
Yes... mental health, universal background checks, universal rights to keep and bear arms, and kicking ISIS's ass...
Bulletproof fabrics?
