think about it. A jump forward in OS effectiveness could happen, as it did with the switch from command line to 2D GUI. Creating a built in front-end for GUI that relies on 3D display is a logical way to create that "Oooooh!" factor when selling the product, and create sales for a new product, namely whatever display enhancement method MS chooses to standardize. From TFA: "the word 'vista' defined means "pleasing view."" That sounds like people haven't figured out why that name was chosen. One of the main definitions of a vista is a view: a horizon.
Dunno, seems like good marketing and business sense to me.
