No doubt this proves that some of our most beloved slashdot users are really bots programmed to scan comments for keywords, and post xkcd links that it thinks are relevant. Kind of like google adsense, but for webcomics.
It's no longer grammatically incorrect. It's widely accepted, and used in major publications. It's been used since the 15th century, and even Shakespeare used it.
Arise; one knocks. /... / Hark, how they knock!
From Romeo and Juliet.
There are no fixed rules of grammar. Only a consensus as to what is right and wrong. As the consensus changes, so does our language.
I tried Ubuntu studio on several different machines, and had no luck at all. If you try Pro Tools on the Mac, I'm sure you'll see what I'm talking about.
I have tried pro tools on a mac, and ubuntu studio, and I have no clue what you're talking about.
Look, enough with this "Just Works" crap. Things either work or they don't. So yeah if you get a program to run, it "just works" for you. Well I had no trouble getting ardour to work on linux. So I guess that "just works" too? I plug in my audio interface, and it just works. I get jack to connect my audio programs, and it just works.
Now, pro tools did not "just work" for me. I had to do some serious configuration to make it work with my hardware.
Just because you installed a program and you had no trouble getting it to do what you want doesn't mean that other users have the exact same experience. This "Just works" stuff is a mac meme that might trick most of the computer buying public, but until you can put it in quantifiable terms, I ain't convinced.
As long as were drawing models from science fiction, may I suggest a "Last Starfighter" system of open source? We scatter special arcade games all across the world. Kid's think they are playing a simple game, when in reality they are training to become project managers of the future in the war against closed source and proprietary software. Also, Richard Stallman gets a spaceship.
You aren't taking network effects into account. I'm young, and most of my friends are in their 20s. Some of them never check their emails, and insist that I send everything to them through myspace. Why? Because all of their friends use myspace too, and none of their friends email that often. So yeah, I have the choice of emailing my friends, but their dependence on myspace forces my hand. We all have a choice, but these mediums have generated enough momentum already that it's very hard to get by when using the alternatives.
I didn't know of this requirement when I posted my comment. Does anyone know of a similar application that makes running a temporary web server idiot-proof, that doesn't require special accounts?
I'm disturbed by the centralization taking place on the web, where by networks like email are replaced with proprietary walled-garden social networks, and entire webpages once written in the open html standard are being done entirely in flash. I'm starting to have hope for the future now. HMTL 5 will reduce the need for proprietary plugins, for sure. This Opera web server thing could work towards decentralizing the web as well. Sure, anybody can set up a web server to host their own content in theory, but its too difficult for average folks to do. With this technology, perhaps more people will sidestep commercial options, and host web pages on their own - meaning less reliance on geocities, google sites, ect. And thats good. It's not healthy for a few companies to have that sort of control over a medium.
Not to mention, there are no sidewalks, and the roads have little shoulder. Perhaps early suburbs were more bike friendly. That was when they looked like this, but modern suburbs are designed for cars. The houses are stretched farther apart, and the only thing connecting developments are 4 lane highways.
Because its shown that people become depressed without spending time outdoors. Because its shown that people become depressed looking at concrete all day without trees. Because in general, people like places where you can experience peace and quiet and escape to nature. Because parks promote exercise, and places with parks have lower rates of obesity. Because parks are fun, and usually safe.
Most governments do not work at the speed of information. People do. You say the effectiveness of new media as activism will decline as governments begin to understand them, but in most cases, media changes faster than governments can adapt to them. It takes months to pass a bill in congress. It takes hours to organize dissidents on the internet.
In this day and age, you don't need to know good html in order to make a webpage. We have WYSIWYG editors. So I don't see why we couldn't have an editor for the canvas tag, that would provide artists with a point and click interface like flash does.
Let's pack up and go home. Michigan is a lost cause. We should have never lived there anyhow. Too cold. Here's my plan: Everybody move out of Michigan, and make the whole state a national park. Charge people to take tours of it's ghost towns and urban decay. Eventually, the wilderness will take back the state, and we'll have a great place to go camping.

Why not use "they" and "their" as a gender neutral pronoun? Isn't that the standard? It's the most fair, and the least noticeable.
cool story, bro.

So your saying well have to keep him here on earth? What a drag. We could have been rid of him.
All the more reason to bulldoze them.

As one of those said musicians, I'm on your side. But I'm tired of waiting. What can we do to make the music industry die faster?

You know not every city is detroit....Some are quite safe.

Yeah third parties do just fine. That's why there are none in the house of representatives, and just two in the senate. ~s
In the US, voting for a third party is sort of like picking the cowboy neil option.
What happens when the ballot looks like this:
Please select the candidate of your choice
on the same day I play Duke Nukem Forever in HURD.
