Reality TV is NOT reality...the situations of a typical reality TV show are just as produced, scripted, and edited as any other sitcom. Writers still make up a plot, casting agents and psychologists still vet the cast, and you'd better be damn sure that the network's lawyers are watching every second of film as closely as the editors responsible for the final cut.
I, for one, can understand the genre rejection the previous poster speaks of. No matter the title or plot, it is still corporate-generated swill.
'Real World' anyone? Yeah...if life were like a beer comercial, it might be the real world.
In most IT positions, your decision will not result in the injury or death of another individual. If you crater your disk subsystem, you have backups (at least I do... with eight years in backup and storage technology, I hope I got it right!) Unless electrocuted (thus earning a nomination for the Darwin award), nobody is dead after a botched upgrade. That's my unique take on the IT world after eight years of nursing.
Another reason: You will not be directly exposed to the myriad of infectious deseases that have grown resistant to medications. They are real and growing in number every day. Gotta remember, if you are exposed, your family is exposed with you.
Finally, in IT we never have to assume the burden of second-guessing every decision we make to minimize our exposure to malpractice lawsuits. Doctors, and now more frequently nurses, swim in shark-infested waters every day.
Good luck to you, Doc. Look in to biometrics, prostethics, or anything with HIPAA attached to it. HIPAA has been good for medical storage business.
Old Gateway 486 system with a 100MHz Overdrive processor, 32MB of memory, and an old Conner 500MB HD. Used to be my firewall server...can still compile a Slackware 2.4 kernel in a whopping 72 minutes!
I have never missed a child support payment. However, the State of Oregon is convinced that, since my payments don't go thru them, they have not been paid. Moreover, the $7000 in Federal Taxes they've confiscated over the last two years have never been distributed to my ex. My ex is on my side, having filed afidavits on my behalf, but the State just doesn't want to listen or return my wrongfully taken money. The State passed a law stating that their residents can be garnished for child support, whether or not they've missed a payment...I'm lucky that Texas doesn't recognize their stupid attempts.
I've had my money taken without due process or representation. Getting it back has been a two-year nightmare...I'll be lucky to have anything left after getting a lawyer.
What has this got to do with a gas tax...well, think on this if your GPS goes to hell, and they garnish your wages to get the funds. The State will garnish for child support, whether or not you've missed a payment...what's to stop them from more aggressive forms of collection on a GPS unit strapped to your car?
I run windows, but I don't trust any of my files to M$ utilities. I use audiocrusher with the LAME extensions to rip. You have to download the LAME extensions from the website, but even with that it took me less than 5 minutes to install. Beautiful 224bit, full-stereo ripping without any bull.
I'm just wondering how the poor bastard didn't see this coming? Bummer.
Note the caveat...Get a DECENT news server, not that pile of crap that comes with ATT or RR or whoever runs your ISP.
The ATT or RR news server caches up to GB of messages....most subscription news services caches up to DAYS of messages. Your section 3 of 767 might actually be there, or someone has already posted the fixed section. I can request an object, and usually get it, within a few days.
Sorry, you sacrifice instant gratification...too bad! Most things worth getting are worth waiting for.
What's more important to you....cash or free time. Cash will NOT bring back your weekend.
I worked for a company that supported a major airline. Our SLA's were at least a decade old (mainframe days), but the customer expected us to uphold the SLA with newer, more complex systems. Did anyone else here go through GBIC hell on the old photon disk arrays? The company skimpped on high availability h/w, and had us by the throat with that outdated SLA.
Made for some long nights when you have to have 24X7 on faulty h/w. Made for a great many lost weekends.
It was the fault of MY management for not updating those SLA's. If you have it in your power to get an agreement signed, DO IT! It will be an uphill battle if you are already supporting a system, because people resist change, but you will be very thankful for putting the effort in.
Vacation: what most IT people get in the form of a check at the end of the year.

I have a few simple reasons to go into IT

I AGREE. MOD PARENT UP!

It can all be found on usenet. If you're going to spend an extra $20 a month, use it to subscribe to a decent news service.
Geez, guys. The April Fools corruption has spread.
