The problem is that since DVD uses blue laser, and CD uses red laser, the blue laser doesn't reflect as good from the burned discs. More expensive players have the twin laser pickup that can read CD-R's.
BTW, check out LG's new DVD player. It can play CD-R's and it can play MP3 burned discs. It even displays the titles on the TV.
