A corporation like NTN would be all over something like this... simply put, they can always use the free marketing, and they do a great job with these games at many pubs/bars across Canada and abroad.
Except that in Canada it is legal to copy music for personal use. Not breaking any laws here.
Okay, I'm sick of people correcting specific wording... and thinking that EVERYONE is wrong; anyway, here is the reasoning for my statement:
If the levy did NOT exist, then the record industry would scream up and down that what is happening is wrong, etc etc... therefore, the implementation of a levy has therefore MADE it legal to copy music... the pressures from the record industry upon the government would be pretty huge, and they obviously don't want that.
Sorry but you are way off base with that statement. The CRTC has never had the authority to impose taxes, levies or fines - and they still don't.
I recall the CRTC discussing and organizing the levy, although they are not the governing body, they are seen as the first-step decision makers in these matters... do you think that cabinet ministers wholly understand the entire situation? They have to confide in people at the CRTC
Hmm, so if we Americans started charging, say, a burglary tax to everyone we could not ever have to worry about going to jail for burglary. That sounds great, plea bargains before the act is even committed!
Nice comparison.... seriously! You do have a great point here....
On one hand, yes.. copying music is breaking the law, but on the other hand... the levy tax pays the record industry as a whole for their "losses" -- so there is a half-right and half-wrong to the concept of levies.
Ah, I love this Canadian mentally that has them believing that everyone here dies on the street because they are uninsured. Sorry, but it's a huge myth. Moreover, Canada caps its doctor's salaries so most of the really good doctors who specialize in the rare and complicated diseases that save people's lives come to the US because our schools are better and you actually get paid properly for your skills. I'm not going to open the socialism debate, but it certainly has its own set of flaws.
The Canadian Mentality is a feeling that everyone 'deserves' to be given health care... no matter what their circumstance. I agree with this concept, obviously...
What you see from Canadians regarding the thoughts of people dying in the streets in the US, is because of fear -- I admit that the thought of a capitalist approach to health care is frightening to me, and it paints a confusing picture to many of us, as we could not imagine getting a second mortgage for a heart bypass (provided that said person doesn't have coverage, etc, etc)
Doctors in Canada do get severely capped, and mistreated, but that's not speaking for all of them. There are many fantastic surgeons, specialists, etc here who enjoy their work, get compensated well for it.. etc.
You must consider the opposite though, the family of a friend of mine moved up here from Ohio over 30 years ago because the parents wanted to work within our health system, because they felt that American Medicare was too oppressive.
So their are many opinions from different sides, I am not knocking the american system, but I personally do feel more comfortable and loyal to the ways of my own country.
Price Protection.... if/when the tax drops off of the price, F-Shop and others, provided that they have price protection, have to refund the difference.
I remember when CD-R's were quite suddenly affected by the recording taxes -- did you know that the CRTC (Canadian Radio and Television Commission) imposed a tax on Audio Tapes and VHS Cassettes back in the early 80's?
So many people here just don't know that these fees have been implemented into the sales structure already, and assume that things are just strange in the US.
I do think, though that these taxes are not a terrible idea, as it keeps the recording industry off of our backs for the most part.
Although using a game engine to do most of the work, you need to consider quite a bit:
- Will the game engine show the expressions necessary in your 'actors'?
- Will you be able to adequately time the sound effects and voice-overs? (I do NOT recommend using a synth, unless you are making a comedy)
- Do you have a strong understanding of programming? Because that's what you will need to do to correctly move characters/wireframes/objects/timing/etc
Although the engine will most definitely cut out quite a bit of production time, the best advice is to 'play'... learning how the physics work, and how the engine reacts to commands, etc are key to making something worth watching.
I ran a BBS called 'Cannibal Bar & Grill' in Mississauga, for 7 years!
I miss those days, although the internet has higher transfer speeds, etc... the comeraderie and tight-knit community was what kept me so deeply involved.
I worked at the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) for some time...
A very valuable tool for youth (typically provided by the educational institution) is to create tactile maps, in which thin strips of foam are used to represent maps which can produce:
- Directions in a Neighbourhood
- Basic City Plans
- Geographical Maps
Basically, you take a piece of hard construction paper, and glue strips and curves of thin foam to it, and name each section with braille.

I find it interesting how the American Politicians consistently speak of freedom, yet take so much away from the Americans as a whole...
I live in Canada, and although we do not tout such unsurpassed freedom as Americans constantly boast of... I have more rights as a Canadian Citizen, and truly live in a society where I am free to say and act in any fashion which I choose... as long as it does not impose on any other person's rights.
Positive Examples
i) I have the right to download MP3's, however, I do NOT have the right to distribute them -- this is handy because most MP3's come from international sources via p2p.
ii) I have the right to live, therefore.. I have healthcare provided by taxpayers (which I am proud to pay into as a taxpayer) -- if we did not have this system, I would be dead and/or blind (I had 4 operations on my eyes, and 1 appendectomy)
Negative, but Funny Examples:
i) It is illegal to spit in the public square
ii) It is illegal to carry more than 44 pennies
iii) When arrested, you do NOT have the right to remain silent (what if you are mute?)
I used to be a hardcore ICQ User (still have it installed with a few contacts now)... but the mass public moved to MSN all of a sudden -- is this in part to the fact that Microsoft shoved it down our throats?
ICQ can do offline messaging, which MSN can't without an annoying add-in installed.
ICQ can do SMS, so can MSN now, but with another add-in... this is all previously achieved technology.
I welcome the concept of Google making an Instant Messenger, please do! They'd probably do a better job at it without almost nightly downtimes of their servers.
Your definition of the term "work" is unfamiliar to me. First, the USSR depended on brutal repression of its citizens; I submit that a government which must resort to such measures is a failure by definition. Second, even if the arms race ultimately led to the USSR's collapse, it's interesting that the US was able to spend just as much, while maintaining a vastly higher standard of living.
Repression of citizens, granted.... I lost most of my family during the occupation, those of us who did not relocate atleast.
Yes, it is interesting that the American System did not collapse... although the USA has an equivalent amount of citizens, and thus should have the same economic potential per person -- it is peculiar. Perhaps this is a result of the lack of willingness to work in pure Communism?
Take China for example... they have an odd system where Communism exists, yet there are for-profit companies which do quite well in manufacturing, is this because of the low wage to their people?
Actually.. being a Ukrainian who moved to Canada in 1917... the 12 Million Ukrainians did not die from starvations for the most part... most were executed.
I don't believe that Freedom is synonymous with Communism or Capitalism respectively....
Communism in it's truest form is a free society, it is all in how it is implemented and maintained.
Capitalism can be very degradating on its people, and is not the answer in terms of freedom.
Freedom comes from freedom to travel, live, and express oneself -- Communism can hinder its people by creating laws against free speech -- Capitalism can do the same.
Communism can work.... although the USSR failed, it failed only because of the Arms Race with the United States -- if those funds were left where they should have been 'With the People', they would have remained.
China is an interesting hybrid of Communism and Capitalism, I am not fully aware of to what degree, but hear that it keeps their astonishing population fed (for the most part) as opposed to suffering and starving as compared with the Capitalist counterparts.
Now THAT'S a good idea!
A corporation like NTN would be all over something like this... simply put, they can always use the free marketing, and they do a great job with these games at many pubs/bars across Canada and abroad.
This is the most terrifying thing anyone could play on christmas... children would run away screaming!
What the hell is MIT thinking??
I could develop better midi music with a random number generator!
lol... duly noted!

How ironic that MSN(BC) is pushing a story about 'don't blame the programming'.
Although legitimate in the concept, I would say that poor programming is most definitely a cause for system failures.
How about using this kind of power for POSITIVE purposes? Like low-cost, efficient, and safe energy?

I find it amusing how random Anonymous Cowards find the time to act as a spellchecker... thank you for correcting me, you lifeless idiot!
So why haven't we started using Cruesoe Processors? (pardon my spelling if incorrect.. I know I'll get trolled if I'm wrong)
The simple answer: Manufacturers and PC Builders are too lazy to change.
The Cruesoe was stated as a low power consumption processor, delivering minimal heat, with no need for a cooling fan.
