The strange thing about memory is that we generally remember really good, or really bad.
The best times in gaming as a child were when I had my Atari 2600, and then when I had my Sega Master System.
Most of the games for both platforms SUCKED! But the good ones were very very good. Same goes for NES, there were alot of bad titles, but the good ones were really really good.
Why would I play a game I don't like? I had like 60 cartridges for my Atari, and played *maybe* 6 of them... (Pitfall, Pitfall 2, Taz, Tapper, and Superman)
The rest of the games blew! Yes, they were alot like moving a large green square around the screen (Adventure, for example)... as a small child, I had an imagination, which helped... but they still had no imagination in graphics with only a few exceptions in titles.
I find it so interesting how the world society as a whole is essentially allowing these things to occur. Where is our moral responsibility?
I am from Canada, and loathe the concept of space warfare. Why would anyone want this capability? Another arms race? Great....
The part of this article that really stumped me, is that the interviewee was stating how wrong it is to have Weapons in Space, but conludes with 'if we did, we would win anyway'... doesn't this statement essentially challenge an opponent?
This kind of mentality is exactly what causes arms races!
If you were to install Fedora for example, front-ends do all of the configurations for you (mostly).
In Gentoo, you emerge each package, and hand configure each.config as necessary.. it teaches you about the interaction of programs, and most of all, how to cleanly get a system up and running.
The way I see it, although we have less murders per capita, the relaxed sentencing doesn't seem to scare off more criminals -- i.e. if the punishments were harsher, maybe it would deter a percentage of future criminals.
As for the west having its share of crackpots, I think it has something to do with the wildly growing magic mushrooms, and hippie-esque lifestyle of the westerners.. lol
I'm in Canada -- we have very strict laws regarding this... I foolishly decided to stand by my dignity and resigned out of disapproval with management.
My manager was then fired shortly after my resignation, because the board of directors took notice of my resignation letter.
In a severe circumstance, the Ministry of Labour among others, would have stormed the place and would have fined them a very severe penalty, and would also have fronted a full court hearing on my behalf, to my benefit.
When I worked in an environment where my employer dictated which tools I could use, I left.... that wasn't the only reason, as they were not receptive to the fact that I am visually impaired, and threatened me on multiple occasions to take away my right to have the lights off in my office (because of light sensitivity)
In short, if YOU feel it was right, you did the right thing... one cannot be productive, or comfortable in an environment where you feel limited.
lol.. agreed, but my point is not to receive it at a place of productivity, given the choice... I'd rather not be troubled during work hours, wasting productive hours.
Now, I am a left-leaning individual myself -- voting for the Canadian NDP.
But on both sides of the scale:
- If America considers it a right to 'Free Enterprise', how is it free enterprise when you can block the competition so readily and so strategically? Many trivial things have been Patented which are so basic that manufacturing a Light Bulb could be considered an infringement
- CopyLeft, and TRUE Free Enterprise are important so that the Proliteriat/Peasant/Common Man/Whatever you wish to call them - placing the right to Patent obscure things is morally wrong, since it takes the power away from the people, and further empowers large corporations who are essentially the only ones who can afford to patent, trademark, or protect what THEY call their own creation.
IMHO: Too far on any side of the scale is too much, as corruption will evolve.. I believe in an economic freedom to innovate and prosper from one's own hard work.. and to not be pushed aside by a conglomerate who really doesn't give a crap about freedom or rights.
The American political system is so contradicting to me sometimes, while the Republicans believe that they are fighting for the freedom of the nation and the people (which is the general target of ANY nation) -- they continue to restrict rights of the American people... suspecting your own neighbour to be a terrorist, for example, and thus checking their passport 50 times before letting them fly to Buffalo.
Now before I put my head in a vice, I find the irony behind what people call 'Left and Right' to be completely confused in many aspects -- I think that American Education of Political Scale differs from that of the teachings within other countries, as would Canadian Education differ from the rest of the world.
According to my education:
- 'Conservative' does not refer to freedom, it refers to 'sticking to the foundations' such as religion, and old-timer thinking, but it can also refer to 'conservative spending'
- 'Liberal', in Canada means a political party or politically minded individual who believes in balancing left and right for the better of the people
- 'Left Wing' means closer to Socialism, not Communism... Socialism is the belief and practice in providing programs for the people to make sure that:
a) They have health care
b) They get pension
c) They don't end up on the street as a result of the lack of a and/or b
- Communism is the complete LACK of individual rights and freedoms, it is the EXTREME left... it takes away individual rights to give righteousness to the many
- Socialism in it's purity is confused with Communism -- there is a very large gap of a difference, depending on the aspect of which you are observing
Anyway, the underlying point is that law should not contradict itself with respect to social responsibility -- software used for 'evil doing' should not be so harshly punished upon the author of the program, which was generally not intended for illegal use, while gun manufacturers who mass produce let-say.... fully automatic personal machine guns, should be punished for the wrong use of the 'tool', whether it be stupidly used for murders, or maniacally used to hunt deer.
I myself was born in Canada, and still live here -- although alot of people have guns for hunting purposes, very few (comparatively) gun related murders occur, is this a result of population difference?
Ideally, your rights are ranked as the top-most important priority, and I can respect that many americans wish to exercise the right to bear arms... not straying from the actual topic:
In Canada, if your child commits a crime, you are not responsible for their ACTIONS, but are responsible for their welfare (wellbeing, and health)
Using the same ideology, gun manufacturers should not be held responsible for the actions of their customers, they only manufactured a tool, the same as (mentioned in an earlier post) how auto manufacturers are not responsible for running down an innocent bystander
Although I am very "what you call liberal" I do not think that responsibility should be placed with the organizations/companies that manufacture tools which could be used in a variety of ways -- responsibility is in the individual
Therefore, the responsibility of the P2P Programmer should not be to ensure that their tools are used to download pirate software/music/movies, as it is only a tool.
- Are auto manufacturers liable for the use of their vehicles? i.e. running someone down?
- Are gun manufacturers liable for the shot victims?
- Are kitchen knife companies liable for a stabbing victim?
This is absurd... seriously, using this logic, everyone is a criminal, and it takes power away from the people in terms of the right to develop new ideas, regardless of your intent.
Agreed, I'm sorry.. but both DS9 and Voyager were very very dissapointing to me, because:
a) Quark and the whole bar scene was gay, and a waste of time
b) Neelix is a fucktard, and is equivalent to Jar-Jar Binks in terms of Sci-Fi comparisons
I do think that DS9 got better with the whole spiritual bit and the war at the end... but come on!
Voyager was too happy, far too happy for a bunch of lost people on a starship, seriously... they acted like they were all high on Valium throughout all episodes, something horrible would happen, and then it'd be okay in about 5 minutes.
I'm a pretty strong ST fan in general, but do miss the writings of Roddenberry, he had a way of writing multiple stories into one plot, and then tying them all together in the end, although sometimes easy to predict, I loved that style.
I used to code bang on a VIC-20... I sucked, but I liked playing with it, when I was 8.
I want it, I want it, I want it!!!
I just wish I could see the fscking website...

Exactly my opinion!!!
Epson has been doing this for like, 8 years or more!
How is this an 'invention'??? Did they buy Epson so they now have bragging rights?
It's not limited to only that...
.config as necessary.. it teaches you about the interaction of programs, and most of all, how to cleanly get a system up and running.

If compiling were damaging to your hard disk, how about Virtual Memory / Swap?
Hard Disks are designed to be used, if the life of the drive were lessened from extensive use, 256MB RAM in an XP Workstation would be catastrophic.
Agreed!!
gambas is an incredible piece of software, especially for a first or second release ever!
lol, okay -- point taken.. I have limited electronics knowledge.
Now, on the software side: Wouldn't it be possible to write a daemon which would limit input from the mouse device? thus limiting the 'garbage'?
magic!
Or attach a simple Potentiometer / Resistor to your serial port.... either works. :)

lol
Although it may appear to be harsh and cold here, atleast in the far north -- let me assure you that such things do not happen here.
In my honest opinion, the laws are too relaxed in Canada, to the extent that murderers and rapists get off much easier than their U.S. Counterparts
I'm in Canada -- we have very strict laws regarding this... I foolishly decided to stand by my dignity and resigned out of disapproval with management.

Although difficult to enforce, this will add ammunition to court battles regarding privacy on this topic.
i.e. If I took an advertising/spam company to court for messaging all of my clientele in my domain, I have something to back it up.
Well, I for one don't want penis enlargement messages, or otherwise sent to my corporate info@ address... it's not pertinent to my business.
Not to mention social health care systems like here in Canada -- this will ultimately aid in lowering diagnostic costs involved with serving patients
Now, I am a left-leaning individual myself -- voting for the Canadian NDP.

AHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
What kind of warped photographer could take those pictures without vomiting? Seriously... what the hell was that? What was Bill thinking?
This whole concept confuses and disgusts me... but it is funny.
