>it does run on an awful lot of things. Winders doesn't really run on very many platforms does it? I mean there's the versions for the PocketPC, and there's x86 (Is there still an Alpha version?), but what else really? BSD and Linux of course have been ported to everything under the sun.
is linux + gnump3d + ripit.pl + LAME. Nothings easier to create mp3s with than the little perl script ripit.pl. Just pop in a cd and type "ripit" at the command line. Gnump3d (www.gnump3d.org) is really easy for a novice to install. Just add a wireless access point to the mix and voila! wireless music library!
The MSI product is noisy and has heat problems. A better solution would be and EPIA system or a Shuttle XPC. The heat pipe technology in the new XPC's works as advertised and the PC's are very quiet.
Sounds OK. a 12 volt wall wart of some type would do it. You could get one made for a notebook or one of the small 12 volt warts made for EPIA systems. But why not just build up a silent fanless EPIA system and leave it on all the time. You could do a lot more stuff and it'd be about as quiet as the drive by itself...

I guess you just haven't seen very many OSes. You must be very young...:-p
from the pictures it looks lot like it is a "Falcon" EPIA format case. (idot.com, logicsupply.com and many others). So basically all he did is whip up a little VIA SFF pc, stuff Linux and a big drive in it. I've been wanting to build one of these for a while. The case is about 65 bucks at most places. The 1 ghz "Nehemiah" motherboards are cool, complete with proc for about $169. Couldn't find specs on the Mirra anywhere, I wonder which mb the Mirra has?

Yes!
I have used several of the SMC "Barricade" soho routers to good effect over the years.
