  1. Coming out from the shadows on Microsoft Asks Slashdot To Remove Readers' Posts · · Score: 2

By nature, I'm a lurker, not a poster.

However, I feel I must post my support for Slashdot in fighting this. My advice:

    1. Set up a legal fund (maybe through the EFF) as soon as possible and post how we can contribute. Some may say it is premature, but now's the best time to get contributions while everyone is mad as hell. Include some language that any funds not used for this fight roll over to the EFF general litigation fund.
    2. Listen to the lawyers, first and foremost. I agree that it would be wonderful to keep as clean as possible of the "censorship" stain, but the best way to win is to play smart and the lawyers should know the smartest way to play. If I'm taking advice in how to play a game of chess, I'll listen hardest to the grand masters.
    3. Pick the right fight. Consult with mp3.com, Napster, 2600, and anyone else stung by DMCA. When this goes to the top (and it will), we want to spend our efforts on the best hope for overturning the DMCA.

After writing that last point, I'm thinking that the legal fund could be wider in scope. Could we amass a large enough anti-DMCA fund to hire top-notch counsel to pick the right battle and follow through to the Supreme Court?

Good luck, and keep us up to date (I know you'll do that anyway, but I'll say it nevertheless).

I don't know if "more with less" is always a good mantra

Back in eary March, there was a /. article on optical switches with a response from interiot who linked to an interesting article:

    The Coming of the Fibersphere

It made a pretty convincing argument that when a resource becomes cheap enough, success will go to those who can waste the resource.

  4. My take-home message... on Why The Future Doesn't Need Us · · Score: 1

... was that in order to survive, the human race must grow up.

Children are restricted in scope of activity in part to protect them. Until they demonstrate the maturity to take care of themselves, we protect them by keeping them out of dangerous situations. As a race, if we don't develop the maturity to handle the scope of our world, we'll eventually be hurt by it. It's as inevitable as the tears you know are coming when you see a two-year old near a hot stove.

In the movie Mindwalk (definitly worth renting!), a politician and a nuclear scientist argue about which side (politics/science) should be responsible for the ethical decisions when pursuing science. Politicians think that the scientists are the only ones knowledgeable enough to make informed decisions, while scientists think that the politicians would outlaw it if it shouldn't be done. (* Okay, I know that is a massive generalizations. *)

I believe (even more so after reading the article) that we all have to take responsibility for everything. The Devil's Advocate in my mind tells me that that's not even remotely feasible, but I still think that saying "That's not my responsibility." is a cop-out whenever it's used.

  5. OK, could we do better? on Utah About to Sign Library Filtering Law · · Score: 3

Let's face it: it's a valid concern of ordinary people, not just the holier-than-thou extremists. (no flames, please). Assuming that an answer has to be found, wouldn't it be better if we could help guide it into an acceptable form?

I know we probably don't have the legal know-how to make it tight and binding (that's probably state-specific anyway), but maybe we could provide the tech-aware attitude that a lot of this kind of legislation is missing.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's already an effort along these lines. Anyone know of such?

    ...without a keyboard?

    Questions I have:

    1. Does a keyboard peripheral exist or is one planned?

    2. Can you get beneath the desktop? It would be great if they allowed the user to customize the interface. They could even create new interfaces later and let you switch between the one you want.

    3. The battery is listed as 1400mA Recharge Li-Ion. Has anyone heard any estimates of how long it lasts? (esp. when used as a continuous MP3 player.)

    4. I want the power! Can the user trash features they don't want to make room for features they do? (If I don't get the camera, I don't want the baggage.)

    5. Okay, if I do want the camera, am I stuck with just one choice? Price?

    Nitpicking aside... looks way cool.
