John Walker Lindh is A MEMBER OF THE TALIBAN, and is charged as a traitor to the United States, is only receiving 20 years in jail. Not only that, but he will probably get parole in less than 10 years.
However, under this new bill, someone like Kevin Mitnick would see life in prison.
Remember that no MS product is "mature" or "production ready" until v3.0 at the earliest. Even then it's still too early to claim it as mature because you need to install Service Pack 6.0b
Just like the Internet sprouted from Neuromancer, this is once again the product of William Gibson's imagination. Did you ever read the book Virtual Light?
This guy finds a pair of sunglasses that act as a HUD for everything that he looks at.
Very cool book, it's worth a read and maybe a Slashdot write-up.
For those of you who remember the building where the 2000 GOP Convention, the 2001 X-Games, and the 2002 NBA All-Star Game all took place:

I work for an ASP in the financial sector located outside of Philadelphia. I'd like to say for the record that not only are we surviving the dot-com crash, but we are doing quite well.
Even through the September 11th disaster and financial woes that followed, our firm thrived and actually had sales INCREASE during that time.
The trick to us being a successful ASP is that we have an extremely driven sales department, and a very adaptable product that can be modified to suit any user's needs. We fill a niche with industry knowledge and expertise that is quite valuable to our customers.
Please don't lump companies like mine in with Dr. Koop dot COM!
If this law passes, the web would have to be completely rebuilt, from the ground up. Remember, when you view a web page, you are DOWNLOADING to your computer images, sounds, and movies to be able to view them in your browser. Remember, there is a copyright statement at the bottom of THIS PAGE right now!
If you cannot have these items on your local PC, then isn't all browser software illegal?
As a software developer, do I have to have a "software cop" validate my source code?
Perhaps you do not understand the concept of the summer blockbuster movie. Summer movies (like the previous two Jurassic Parks, all of the Batman movies, and The Matrix), according to critics and the Academy of Motion Pictures, suck. The Oscars and critics typically think that most movies that are released during the summer (with a few noted exceptions) are not worth their time, even though these films typically make two to three times more at the theaters than the films that critics do approve of.
But why are Summer Blockbusters (that suck according to the people who get to see them before the rest of the public) making so much money? Because people like going to movies to have FUN! Be as critical as you want of a movie, but know this: When critics rip a movie, it means it's probably going to be a fun film to see.
I'm not going to see a film so that I can reflect on my inner being and experience a life changing event. I go to see movies to be entertained. This is why I don't listen to film critics, and I believe the Oscars are a joke.
If you want a real measure of what films are actually good entertainment, go to Ain't it Cool News
I did see the Mummy Returns last night. Yes, the plot was hokey, and The Rock had a cameo appearance at best. The CGI effects of the final character were mediocre, but I had fun. There hasn't been a decent movie to come out in months. This is the first 'Summer Blockbuster' of the season and I enjoyed it. I wouldn't give it two thumbs up, but I would give it a large butter soaked, sloppy tub of popcorn.
The statements by the Web Standards Project (WaSP) on the 10th of April were about the IE 5.5 preview release, not the final release.
At the time of the 4/10 statements, the WaSP asked Microsoft to complete their implementation of several standards including CSS1. Microsoft has claimed to support CSS1 in IE5.5, but the WaSP has evidently found the support to be incomplete.
Personally, it frustrates me that Big Bad Billy has decided to fracture the web space even more with this version of IE. As a web developer I can appreciate the new toys that were added to IE, but I also despise how IE won't render normal HTML the same way that every other browser will.
The IBM license permits users to copy and reuse the source code taht it applies to. I am administering a PHP/Opensource project that has opted to use this license and we have found it to meet our needs. As opposed to the source code being binary in nature, the source code is the server side scripts that generate the public domain HTML that everybody sees and uses.
We feel that the final product (web site code simliar to SlashCode) should include a link to the license and a link to download the sourcecode. This way the license is satisfied with being displayed to the public in a conspicuous location.
Have you thought about sending this suggestion to a US congressman? I'm sure that Senator Patrick Leahy (D - Vermont) would take an interest in this idea.
He has been one of the opponents of the CDA since day 1. Perhaps we should bring something from Slashdot to the Senate floor. Wouldn't Taco be proud??
This tool looks like the type of thing that would greatly assist hospitals. Doctors could write or dictate their orders to the pad while examining the patient and the Freepad would update a main database of the things that a patient would need.
The possibilities of this tool in a hopsital setting are endless...
The tone of the author in this piece seems very anti-Linux. It's almost as if he's blaming Linus himself for this issue surfacing.
Let's face it. If DVDs are pirated as much as the Motion Picture Association fears, then the company that made the Xing DVD player will be sued and put out of business.
But what I want to know is, how can I ENCRYPT to a DVD so that I can put my home movies that I converted from 8mm to VHS, on DVD?
Then, how do I write those spiffy features for the DVD?
Having an open platform to develop on is one thing.
But developing on the same platform as your target is another. No emulators, no conversions, it's the same thing.
That is what the developers want. Portability
Personally, I don't think that anybody would want to go out and have to pay $300 for a copy of Office Pro 2000, and then have to spend another $150 (or something like that) for Office Pro 2000 Windows CE version.
In this competition, I have to give the advantage to Linux.
Personally, I feel that after 19" monitor size is a waste.
As is, I don't use all of my desktop space, so why do I need to spend the money for a larger monitor that takes up more area (desktop, or hanging on a wall, or wherever) and is going to be a bigger pain in the ass to move?
I really enjoy using my 17' and 15" monitors at home. I don't need 21" or 38" or whatever.
If I want Quake large and in charge, I'll buy a VR helmet.
I just watched the Breakfast Club again this weekend and I'm reminded of the reason that Anthony Michael Hall was in detention. he brought a flaregun to school.
A flaregun! this is 1985 and a student has a flaregun in school. He was (according to the writer) sent to detention.
Why can't we use counseling and existing forms of in-school discipline before the sheriff gets involved.

X10 provides the following link: http://www.x10.com/home/optout.cgi?DAY=30&PAGE=htt p://www.x10.com/x10ads1.htm
that sets a 30 day opt-out. Modify the DAY parameter to be 3000 and you will never see them until 2009!

XML is definitely the way to go. The XSLT stylesheets that you could generate can take you very far. Make sure you look into XSL:FO.
In particular, take a look at the XML Apache Project's FOP.
FOP, which is written in Java, will transform your XML data into PDF format.

If you've been watching Survivor you know that water does not represent life.
Fire represents life. That's why they snuff out the torches at the end of every episode when someone is booted from the island.
C'mon... we need to be watching more TV!!

This title was very misleading... I thought this may have been written by ESR or RMS or Judge Jackson about the Microsoft Monopoly.
Gates of Fire would have been a much better title for the 'Pirate of Silicon Valley' if you ask me...

CBS has some lofty comments about Red Hat:
"Red Hat, the specialist in software applications using the revolutionary Linux operating system..."
Revolutionary eh?
It seems the big media is really taking a good look at our little community!

Okay, I'm going to rip 100 CDs onto a harddrive that only has enough portable power to play 10 hours with of music.
Let's think this one through:
Each Cd is roughly an hour of music.
10 hours = 10 CDs.
Why do I care about the other 90 CDs that I could rip to its harddrive?
Have you checked out a filtering application for your HP printer. I have a HP 820Cxi that I have working with Linux.
Try this filtering program listed on Freshmeat called ifhp.

Structured names on a WAN are a GREAT IDEA!
My company uses this formula:
area code + department use + type + unique number
So we have servers named:
610ISDNT001
215MKTNV001
215ISDSB001
Works out pretty well!
