It would be nice if the government could get their aerospace act together and just make something that works, wouldn't it? The X-33 is just another project that has peen hyped and funded too much, and is too manager controlled, and tries to be the swiss-army-chainsaw of rockets. Just make a specialized rocket that does one thing well. It's like comparing the Quake engine to the Unreal engine: one is really fast indoors and in small outdoor situations, the other takes 5 minutes to load a board.

I would tend to agree with you, but not because Free software doesn't cost anything. Pay software has prevailed so far because its architecture is made for games, which is the primary use of computers. One might argue that Word 2000 isn't a game, but, last time I checked, games were the only computer program that used an animated character.

Windows is installed on most every computer sold, and mostly because people like the way it works with their games. If the computer manufacturers give consumers the option of Linux or dual-booting, not only do they lose the gaming aspect(not in dual booting, though), but M$ charges a lot more for the Win98/SE/ME/whatever license included.

If people would quit screwing around with their toy computers and try to get work done, they might see the benefit of Linux. Or, then again, they might not.

  9. M$ Licensing Agreements on Slashback: Imagination, Evasion, Watermarks · · Score: 2
First of all, M$'s licensing agreements change more frequently than the coloring on most chameleons/octopi (whichever you prefer), so a single change that allows reimaging isn't as big a deal as a change that would allow people to view their source code and openly mock it for the cobbled together garbage that it is.

Second, Microsoft isn't completely evil, thanks to good hardware such as the Explorer mouse, which holds the place of honor on my desk; the good gaming hardware at good prices (the original M$ Gamepad, the first FF Joystick that worked w/ many games); and the timely support that they give to new hardware, thanks to their marketing efforts. Thanks to the >75% margin of Windows 9x on desktops, most hardware manufacturers include a windows driver, while few put linux drivers inside the box.

While Linux may be technically superior, Windows is still the only operating system that can give rise to a good game of Half-Life: Counterstrike. (Lest you count the dedicated server for linux)

An SLI interpreter could only work really well on a closed system that can't be modified... say an Internet search site, Nintendo 64 et. al., or an Internet appliance. This is because these systems are unlikely to have extensions that change a whole lot from time to time. If your system has scads of extensions that don't obey rules, like in *nix, Windows, and MacOS, you'll run into problems like naming of files, locations of these files, and more.

If you look in some Linux man pages, you find that some essential files have different locations, names, and command line options. In Windows, I throw my documents on the D: drive, while Windows wants them in the C:\My Documents directory. On the Mac, you can drag and drop a folder full of executable files to another location without warnings or apparent problems. This would drive an SLI interpreter crazy.

If the filename is automatically deduced from the contents, and properly indexed, an SLI could work on one of these open systems. (I'm not referring to open source, but to the fact that its' internal workings are somewhat modifiable.) But what smart Windows user keeps the Fast Find extension running constantly? Automatic systems don't like interference, and open systems thrive by it. SLI will only work reliably on video games, internet appliances, and web site indices.
